What's new

An average Pakistani consumes 130 Kilos of wheat per year.

I think that photo is from from Bannu/KP according to google. In Pak punjab rural areas almost every home have tandoor but they don't make roti/naan as big as that from what i've seen.
Yeah , thanks. I think you're probably right. Punjabis on both sides of the border can't be so different. Our punjabis too have tandoors. - and cook rotis, dal and of course the national bird of Punjab - the Tandoori Chicken. :D

.
From our elders in northern Pakistan we hear they used to go up on the mountains with jar of butter oil . Then sip it while cutting grass.
If i sip a whole jar of Ghee, I will get a heart attack
My grandfather used to have full kauli (small steel bowl) of ghee everyday when he used to work in the fields, and also shakkar (dont know what is called in English) with full kauli of ghee in wheat harvest days. He never had any issue with heart disease and diabetes. This last 30 odd years war on fat is over with new research coming up, the real bad guys now are carbs and refined sugar. Being Sikh Punjabi person so I suppose our food habits would be very similar to Pakistanis. That said, you guys cook meat better than this side of Punjab, and also found your Kheer better than ours.

Don't know the rest of India, however, Punjabi people (both Hindus & Sikhs) drink crap loads of milk every day, and won't be surprised if their per capita milk consumption is way more than the rest of the world.

Yep most of the Punjabi homes in Indian side also had Tandoor especially when I was growing up in 90s. However, those Tandoors were mostly used for making Rotis not Tandoori Chicken.

We were under your rule during Sarkar khalsa era
And our ancestors fought against your armies to get freedom. So parts of our cultures overlap.
We live at 4000 feet above sea level and our ancestors used to go up on 8-9000 feet mountains daily to cut grass all day then carry 30-40 kilos of grass bundle down 4-5000 feet to the buffaloes' they kept.
The carrying Ghee up on the mountains is similar to what your ancestors did as their work was too much energy intensive.
On the other hand myself descending from those hardy people cannot eat two spoons of Ghee without getting diarrhoea. Because although I may have genetic ability to draw energy from fats, I don't work as hard as my ancestors and my body rejects Ghee as unnecessary.

ThAts the Romali roti - I think it's originally from the Punjab - but nowadays available all over India.

As kids, once a month or so my dad used to buy us romalis with amritsari fish, pickled onions and green chutney....yum !

Totally agree. To be honest, I won't able to have more than two spoons of ghee either.

Is fruit an important part of your diet in Pak? Fruit is huge in Iran, I think we eat more fruit than actual food.
