Saudi Arabia bans 50 names including 'Rama' for 'conflicting with kingdom's culture'

Yes, I agree with the banning as none of these names are socially or culturally accepted. In addition, the issue was actually raised by ordinary Saudi citizens, most of whom happen to be Arabic language teacher.

Just think of it like not being allowed to cycle in Kolkata.

If no one wanted these names then why was there a need for such legislation ?

Sometimes people don't know what the meaning of some names stand for, but as soon as they find out what real meaning of the names, people wouldn't want to give such names. So the listing became more like of a remainder about the semantic meaning of each name.

Then shouldn't the people decide for themselves what they want or not ?
Why pass a legislation banning them ?

Their land. . their rules. .

why people are getting so worked up ? :coffee:
No-one is getting 'worked up'.....people are expressing their views regarding a news in a forum......forums are for this purpose only ain't they?.....

If your view is, "their land their rules", just say that............why are you getting worked up because others are expressing their views?....

Some people might want to pick any of these 50 banned names without knowing what they really stand for. But as soon as they find out about the real semantic meaning of them, they won't consider giving it. And this is what all this legislation about similar to Denmark's banned names list and New Zealand's.

Some people feel offended, so be it.

What if someone did know the meaning of these names and still wants to pick them ?
Wouldn't that be an infringement of a very basic Human right by not allowing them to do so ?

Chill dude. . express yourself where it is needed. . Stop wasting your time when your or mine opinion hardly matters :)

Some of the names have political connotation like "Abdel Nasser".
Gamal Abdel Nasser actively called for the overthrow of all Gulf monarchies.

No, Abdul Al-Naser is banned because some people give the name of Al-NASIR to other babies, which may confuse the real meaning of Al-Naser - which is one of the 99 names of the God -

There is a notable Saudi politician who's name is Al-Naser ...

No one is going to accept any of these names if they found out what they really stand for.

As for the basic violation of human rights, I guess India has less to say on this regard to the subject.

How can you speak for all the Saudis that no one will accept these names ?

Why not just educate the people about the meanings and let them decide ?

What if a hypothetical Saudi Arabian citizen who happens to be a Hindu wants to keep the name Ram ? Or a Christian Lauren ?

And please don't deflect by bring up India or Nepal or China.

Weird , but whatever, their country.

What about those people who already have these names and live in Saudi ?
