LONDON: Saudi Arabia's interior ministry has banned 50 names they argue contradict the culture or religion of the Kingdom, according to reports by local media.

Parents in the kingdom will reportedly no longer be able to call their children by names such as Linda, Alice, Elaine or Binyamin (Arabic for Benjamin) after the civil affairs department at the ministry issued a list of the prohibited names.

Binyamin is believed in Islam to be the son of Prophet Jacob, but is also the name of the current Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Some names on the list are allegedly banned by the interior ministry because they are considered "blasphemous," non-Arabic or non-Islamic, or contradictory to the kingdom's culture or religion, Gulf News has reported.

The ban was also allegedly justified by the ministry because some of the names were deemed foreign or "inappropriate".

Other sets of forbidden names include those with royal connotations, such as Sumuw (highness), Malek (king) and Malika (queen).

Some on the list do not fit into any of these categories however, leaving the reason for banning them open to speculation.

What a liar, he said sunni world agree with Israel to bomb Iran, he has US bases and never act against arabs to protect Israel

restrictions upon restrictions......on common citizen.....while the Saudi princes are free to do whatever they like..........Saudi Arabia is a unique country....
Wikileaks shows Saudi wild party with Alcohol, drugs, sex and prostitutes - English pravda.ru

This happens among ordinary citizens as well. the State can't monitor whatever goes beyond someone's walls.

But then again, I bet these butthurt feelings came out of an Indian ego, which is a legit cause, just as much as India is entitled to take whatever measure necessary to what it needs.

It has one Indian type name so I don't see why it bothers Indians here whereas it has a bunch of Islamic names banned so if Saudis want to protest this they can themselves.

The whole news was reported as if it were some sort of declaration of war against Hinduism by KSA, which is pathetic.

But those who feel offended will only get one response and one response only i.e. THAT'S GOOD!

You are ok with this mindless decree curbing your personal freedoms ?
It affects you, not Indians.

A- It is called a legislation, not a decree.

B- None of these names are culturally or socially accepted by our standards, which means that if there is something that has to be mindless in this issue, then that would be the names mentioned on this list.

C- Having seen the reactions by Indian posters, I can see who's blood is boiling and who isn't.

I am just curious do you not mind if someone tells you what you can or can not do.
Afterall name is a very personal choice.
Yes or No would suffice

Yes, I agree with the banning as none of these names are socially or culturally accepted. In addition, the issue was actually raised by ordinary Saudi citizens, most of whom happen to be Arabic language teacher.

Just think of it like not being allowed to cycle in Kolkata.
