The Chief Minister of India's capital territory, Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal has called for a ban on flights with Singapore.

According to the Hindustan Times (HT), Kejriwal had tweeted that a new variant of Covid-19 which is "found in Singapore" was apparently "extremely dangerous" for children and could result in a third wave of infections within India. The B.1.617 variant was first detected in India.

However, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said that while the B.1.617 strain appears to be more virulent, none of the children who were infected are seriously ill.

In appealing to the country's central government, Kejriwal said that air services with Singapore should be cancelled with immediate effect, while options for the vaccination of children should be prioritised.

Kejriwal is a member of the Aam Admi Party, different from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and their erstwhile main opposition, the Indian National Congress.

While Kejriwal's comments were reported on other English-language news media in India as well, such as The Hindu, NDTV, and The Economic Times, HT is the only outlet that used the term "Singapore virus".

Other Indian citizens replied to the minister's tweet, pointing out that the B.1.617 strain is the same one first detected in India.

Since April 24, all long-term pass holders and short-term visitors with recent travel history to India within the last 14 days, including transit, are not allowed entry into or to transit through Singapore.

India will be the main source of new covid variants. Also India only tests >0.001% of their covid cases for variants so there's no good data on what kind of variants are developing until it infects more then 10% of the population. Countries should just close borders with India.

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Tuesday (May 18) said that there is “no truth whatsoever” in the assertion in several news reports in India that there is a Singapore variant of the COVID-19 virus.
The claims were reported in articles published by the Hindustan Times and NDTV, both publications from India

The articles quoted tweets from Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was cited as saying that the new strain is “extremely dangerous for children” and could result in a third wave of infection in India.

MOH said in response on Tuesday that “there is no ‘Singapore variant’”.

“The strain that is prevalent in many of the COVID-19 cases in recent weeks is the B1.617.2 variant, which originated in India,” it said.

“Phylogenetic testing has shown this B1.617.2 variant to be associated with several clusters in Singapore.”

Two COVID-19 sub-variants from India have been detected among imported and community cases in Singapore, including those who have been linked to the Tan Tock Seng and Changi Airport clusters

In the media reports in India, Mr Kejriwal was also cited as urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to immediately cancel air services with Singapore and prioritise the vaccination of children.
Mr Kejriwal also made those views known on Twitter, which Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan responded to on Wednesday morning:

India has reported more than 25 million cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, with a death toll of 278,719.
Singapore has stopped allowing entry for long-term pass holders and short-term pass holders with recent travel from India from Apr 24.
