T-129 ATAK BEGINS TESTING MİLDAR MILLIMETER WAVE RADAR

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and Meteksan have begun testing Meteksan’s MİLDAR millimeter wave radar from onboard the TAI T-129 ATAK dedicated attack helicopter.

TAI and Meteksan have spent the past several months integrating the MİLDAR to the T-129. Currently, the MİLDAR-equipped T-129 is undergoing ground control tests (C4Defence).

The Turkish Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) commissioned Meteksan to develop the radar in June 2013 with the aim of delivering the system to the Turkish armed forces in 2018-2019.

The MİLDAR can track targets from up to 12 km.

Notes & Comments:

An millimeter wave radar is essentially an Extremely High-Frequency synthetic aperture radar (which is typically used to ‘map’ a picture of the ground). Millimetric wave radars for helicopters, such as the AH-64D Longbow, are used for target tracking and engagement, especially for moving vehicles such as tanks.

Functionally, a millimeter wave radar can be used against ground targets in the same manner as an airborne radar can be used against aerial targets. For example, the MİLDAR could identify and track targets on land. If equipped with millimeter wave radar-tipped air-to-ground missiles, the T-129 can engage those targets. Semi-active seekers would require the MİLDAR to keep a lock on the target for the missile, but an active-seeker (akin to the one on the MBDA Brimstone) would provide fire-and-forget capability.

It appears that the T-129 ATAK will carry the MİLDAR from one of its wing-based stations, which is unlike the AH-64D, which carries the AN/APG-78 above the main rotor.

AH-1Z viper also carries LongBow MW radar on wing tip station.
Both options (Z-10 and T-129) that PAA is currently looking at donot currently carry a MW radar.

Surprisingly, Z-19 carries it.

The Harbin Z-19 light attack helicopter features a gyro-stabilised sensor turret fixed under the nose. This turret houses forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera systems, laser range finder/designator and a TV.

The helicopter is also equipped with the latest mast-mounted active millimetre-wave (MMW) radar to find and engage targets over long ranges and comes with advanced helmet mounted sight (HMS) and fly-by-wire controls.

This is Mildar Phase 2. Meteksan says that SSM showed Mildar's location as under the pylon. SSM and Meteksan still engaging in talks about the location of the radar. There will be Mildar Phase 3, and we will see the final product and it's final location.

T-129 Radar
Meteksan Savunma Sanayii AŞ and Bilkent University formed a consortium to develop an advanced MW (Millimetre Wave radar) (MILDAR), similar to the Longbow and the IAI/ELTA radars, intended to enter service in 2009. MILDAR was successfully completed in February 2012

The Longbow radar is older technology, it incorporates an analog 2D pulse Doppler radar. But pulse Doppler is needed for tracking and measuring the distance to the targets (guiding the missile with this info)

The Mildar radar is of newer technology (phased array) incorporating more possibilities (pulse Doppler, SAR and ISAR modes):
- pulse Doppler works the same as with the longbow
- SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) with SAR one can create radar images (like a black and white photo)
- ISAR (Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) a technique with which one can create 2 dimensional pictures (terrain mapping, terrain hights etc.)

And not only on the radar / flir the T_129 has also the smart launchers of Roketsan, a modern type plug and play launcher. Whatever missile you attach to it UMTAS laser, IR or MMW guided, it recognizes the missiles and automatically appears on the pilot screen ready to be used.

These "gadgets" make our helicopters very flexible and you can equip your helicopter immediately according to mission requirements in the shortest time:

- In normal weather condition use the standart FLIR and IR or laser guided missiles
- In adverse weather attach the radar and MMW missiles

For targeting the pulse Doppler is used (same with the Longbow)

Mildar is a multimode radar while Longbow is only an FCR (fire control) radar.

If we think radar guided BVR is on the way for air platforms also this means MWR guided umtas wont be much problem.I think we wont wait too much for it.
