Remembering the 1979 seige of Holy Kaaba

On 20 November 1971 during Hajj a shocking incident was witnessed when Khariji militants seized the Holy Kaaba, the armed takeover resulted in blood shed in the most holiest site of the Islamic world. The seige continued for two weeks with a final battle to regain control of Holy Kaaba.

Barefoot, worshippers knelt in the Grand Mosque’s marble-paved courtyard. Clearing his throat, the imam picked up the microphone and read out the blessings. On his cue, the faithful prostrated themselves on the ground, in a vast succession of concentric circles that radiated from the Kaaba, an ancient cube draped in black silk embroidered with gold that looms in the center of the enclosure.

Then, just as the imam concluded the prayer with wishes of peace, gunshots rang out. The crackling sound reverberated in the courtyard as in an echo chamber. Stunned worshippers spotted a young man, a rifle in his hands, walking briskly toward the Kaaba. Another shot sent into the air flocks of panicked pigeons that usually graze on the plaza
outside the Grand Mosque.

Juhayman al Uteybi, emerged from the depths of the mosque. A forty-three-year-old Bedouin preacher with magnetic black eyes, sensual lips, and shoulder-length hair that seamlessly blended into a black curly beard, Juhayman conveyed a sense of immediate authority despite his slender stature. Emulating a piety first displayed by Prophet Mohammed himself, he wore a traditional Saudi white robe that was cut short at midcalf to signal the rejection of material goods. Unlike his fellow gunmen, he was bareheaded, with only a thin green hair band keeping his unruly locks in check.

Hi Why does this not contain any reference of the SSG Unit

Pakistani SSG was involved in final clear out....
A very sad incident ,it shocked the whole islamic world to the core...

Who are these khariji militants ?

I remember reading somewhere that these commandos had to convert to Islam before taking part in the operation:woot:

These people did not take part in the operation. They just made up the strategies and tactics and monitored the situation from outside the limits of Makkah and the Holy Area (where non-muslims are forbidden, although they still go there, hiding ofcourse.).

No i dont think any non muslim army was called in..
Pakistan army was well trusted by arabs then, amd were flown in for help.

But yes it was a very big event,so many countries offered help.

What happened was, in summary:

There were were clashes between tribes in the region. After the heat escalated, early morning the militants armed with snipers, assault rifles and machine guns stormed the mosque and before/after the Fajr azan killed the Muazin. The force was led by Juhaiman ibn Muhammad ibn Saif al Otaibi.

After taking over the Mosque, they sent snipers to the towers and killed anyone trying to enter the Mosque. Several Saudi policemen and soldiers were killed, trying to break in and dropping via helicopters. Atlast, SSG was called in led by a Lt. Col. He had plans to electrocute everyone which was denied by the Saudi commanders.

The SSG then broke into the Mosque from King Fahad Gate, one of the biggest gates, fought and killed the militants, pushing others to run into basements. The basement was then fired with poisonous gas by SSG again, but the militants somehow survived. Finally the idea of CO of SSG was accepted, the basements were flooded and the militants electrocuted.

Many different sources/websites have similar version of story, I will post the most-suitable as per my knowledge in some time.

This attack was one of the main reasons why saudia went strict on shia...

I would not go in detail, the information could possibly be sensitive, but after this attack KSA set up special Intelligence team for safeguarding the Grand Mosque.

"Sensual lips", "Emulating a piety first displayed by Prophet Mohammed himself"

Something is wrong with this writer...
