Turkey is now the top drone exporter, surpassing the US and China, with 65% global share

Türkiye has emerged as the world's leading drone exporter, surpassing both the United States and China in this rapidly growing market. According to a recent report by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), Türkiye is projected to account for 65% of global drone exportsin 2024, a significant increase that underscores its expanding influence in military technology.

The Rise of Türkiye in Drone Exports

Since 2018, Türkiye has been at the forefront of drone sales, accounting for a remarkable 65% of the combined total of 69 sales of armed military drones made by Türkiye, China, and the U.S. to 40 different nations. This shift marks a dramatic change in the global landscape of military drone supply, where traditional leaders like Israel and the U.S. have seen their dominance challenged by the emergence of low-cost military drones developed by Türkiye and China. The success of Turkish drones, particularly the Bayraktar TB2, has played a crucial role in this transformation. The TB2 has gained international acclaim for its effectiveness on various battlefields, including conflicts in Libya and Ukraine. Its performance has not only bolstered Türkiye's reputation but has also led to increased demand from countries seeking advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

Türkiye's strategy includes expanding its reach into new markets, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. Recent agreements with countries like Saudi Arabia aim to enhance drone production capabilities within those regions, allowing for greater accessibility to Turkish technology. This initiative is expected to facilitate sales to economically disadvantaged nations while also addressing financing challenges. In addition to the TB2, other models like the Akıncı combat drone are also gaining traction internationally. As of now, Baykar, the company behind these innovations, has secured contracts with 34 countries for its TB2 drones and 10 countriesfor its Akıncı drones.

Implications for Global Defense Dynamics

The rise of Türkiye as a leading drone exporter signifies a shift in global defense dynamics. The increased availability of advanced UAVs from Türkiye could alter military strategies worldwide, particularly among nations looking to enhance their aerial capabilities without relying on traditional Western suppliers. The rapid development and deployment of these technologies are likely to influence future conflicts and geopolitical relationships. As Türkiye continues to solidify its position as a dominant player in the drone market, its advancements not only reflect technological prowess but also highlight a broader trend towards diversification in global military supply chains. With ongoing innovations and strategic partnerships, Türkiye is poised to maintain its leadership role in the defense sector for years to come.
