I don't doubt your sincerity, and appreciate your words.

But I disagree with the "huge in number" part.

The question I ask is a simple one.

If India's economy was growing at a torrid 20%, how many would speak up if the BJP government was continuing its anti-Muslim pogroms and marching us off to detention camps?

The reality is very few. For the vast many who you consider as "silent" would simply look the other way as they are enriching themselves.

Perhaps one can draw some parallels with people in the US.

I know some fine individuals on a personal level (White, middle class & upper class) who voted for Trump in the last election and might still vote for Trump.

"He's good for the economy, he'll reduce taxes, he's in favor of reducing government etc".

These people are not racists (for as long and as closely as I've known them, that would have become obvious), they've even agreed with me on Trump's misogyny & xenophobia, but it's always been frustrating that for some people, their bank balance takes precedence over all else.
