Tripura’s power export stalledKolkata Correspondent bdnews24.com

Tripura’s Communist chief minister Manik Sarkar says India’s union government is sitting on his plans to export surplus power to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has helped Tripura’s ambitious 700MW gas-based power project materialize at Palatana, south of state capital Agartala, by allowing passage of the heavy equipment through Chittagong and the river port of Asuganj.

A grateful Tripura government promised to allow Bangladesh access at least 100MW of power from the project – and more if Delhi allowed.

Manik Sarkar announced his intentions during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Agartala in late 2011.

“We want to give Bangladesh 100MW from our share in this project. Delhi can give more from its share of power in this project,” Sarkar told bdnews24.com.

“But the Centre ( India’s union government) has not yet responded to our proposal for reasons best known to it,” Manik Sarkar told bdnews24.com.

He said his government put up this proposal for power export to Bangladesh immediately after Sheikh Hasina’s visit but Delhi has sat on it for more than a year now.

“We really don’t know why they(Delhi) are doing this ! I have tried pushing the issue but without success so far,” Sarkar said.

“Bangladesh is a dear friend and the present government has done much to address our concerns ,” said Sarkar. “ We should also do what we can for Bangladesh.”

Sarkar’s pitching for power exports to Bangladesh is driven by several considerations.

Tripura has substantial reserves of natural gas that can be used to generate power but unless Bangladesh provides passage for the heavy equipment, it is impossible to bring them through the highways of northeast India where several bridges are too weak to take the load.

That is why the Palatana project could not take off until the Hasina government allowed transshipment of heavy equipment through the Chittagong-Asuganj route.

Tripura does not have many industries , so its demand for power is limited and it can earn substantially in foreign currency by selling power to Bangladesh, which is power deficit, atleast for a next 4-5 years.

The Bangladesh demand for power may spur more investment in Tripura’s power sector and attract investments in other gas-based industries which Tripura is looking at .

The tiny northeast Indian state of Tripura goes to polls for its legislative assembly on Feb 14 and the ruling Left Front appears to be well on its way to return to power.

After their defeat in West Bengal and Kerala, Tripura is the only state in India that is run by a Communist-led Left coalition.

Awami League regime went as far as putting dam on rivers and canals to allow over sized indian equipments and destroyed livelihood of many Bangladeshis. Awami League regime fed indian deception that Bangladesh will get electricity and allowed corridor for indian power generation equipments.

Its time to skin these Awami indian dalals alive and auction out their properties including 32nd Dhanmondi road house to recover loss of people and nation.

Is it good or bad? What is the current rate of Electricity in BDesh ?

@all Banglageshis

Dont jump the gun before it locks the target. There would be some Diplomatic and international issues that have to be solved. Even you know how bureaucracy in our countries work. Thats why its important to have open, hasslefree trade between our countries. you guyz always get apprehensive of we eating up but u dont understand, having strings attached only hamper your own cause. The example is in front of u.

India power import deplayed

Power import from India is being deferred by at least one month as the installation of cross-border transmission line to supply electricity to the national grid will take until July to complete, Parliament was told on Thursday.

The import was scheduled to start by July this year.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Huq Khan told Parliament a 400-KV transmission line from Bahrampur of India to Bheramara of Bangladesh and a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) sub-station would be built by July.

Earlier in the day, Power Secretary Monwar Islam told a joint press conference after a meeting with his Indian counterpart that they were hopeful of starting the import on schedule on completion of the transmission and grid line installation.

Monwar’s predecessor Abul Kalam Azad had said in July last year that Bangladesh would start importing electricity from July 2013 to ease supply shortage.

During Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi in January 2010, Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding with India for importing 500MW power to tackle energy crisis.

The Power Development Board an agreement with Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd or NVVN, a subsidiary of India's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), on Feb 28 last year in New Delhi to import 250MW electricity.

The country is yet to sign any deal for buying the remaining 250MW from India’s private sector.

Indian Power Secretary P Uma Shankar told Thursday’s press conference that installation of infrastructure to supply power from India to Bangladesh was on progress.

He said per unit (kilowatt hour) power would cost Rs 2.40, equivalent to Tk 4, which excludes transmission expense.

The two countries also inked a deal on Jan 29 last year to set up Bangladesh’s biggest-ever power plant, having 1320MW generation capacity, at Rampal in Bagerhat.

That's bad, GoI should felicitate the sale of surplus power to Bangladesh at an economical cost.

more lie to cover up previous indian lie. As predicted indo Awami lie and deception continues....

Actually BD Gov. helped a lot to set up that power station. We given free gateway to move heavy equipments through our land.
And relationship with Tripura is good with us. So we can expect that tolerance.

Yes, so i'm advocating this transfer of energy. As it'd be uneconomical to transfer energy back to West Bengal and further because of loss in transfer of electricity.

GoI and state government should keep their ego aside and settle this dispute.

India is playing good cop bad cop using state CM. In case of water from Teesta river india is using West Bengal CM as bad cop and indian govt playing good cop. And in case of electricity/transit from Tripura, indian govt is playing bad cop and asked Tripura CM to play good cop. Only indian dalals and naive would fall for indian deceptions.
