Correct. Nawaz Sharif barely ran a campaign in Sindh in the 2008 elections. He is known to count on votes from central/northern Punjab alone to get to power in the center. Very dangerous for Pakistan even in times like today where ethnic/religious politics is not as powerful as it was till the 90's.

For all its fault, the PPP remains the only force with enough presence in all regions (including even Gilgit-Baltistan, FATA, Islamabad) to be called a national political party. PPP doesn't need to shed its 'Bhutto' charisma. But does need to shed the dynastic politics. I am hoping that PTI will be a truly national level party. Well... only a few months remain to see if that is true or not. PMLN really needs to make inroads in Sindh. Real vote bank--and not coopting the Pagaras or Sindhi nationalists. Without a party which glues Punjab and Sindh Pakistan is doomed.

Again, this may go against them. Since it may fuel greater interest in the urban areas but would still have little effect in the rural areas.

That's quite unlikely, Ive seen Mian Sb up close.. Drawing room close.. and while I dont consider him "Machevallian" like Zardari.. He is the smartest buffoon out there. Because while he does and without an iota of doubt from me.. harbor good intentions inside for Pakistan, he is too easily influenced and scared of alternatives and threats.
His aides aren't all non-exploitative and influence his decision a lot, and while he has matured over these past ten years. It does not seem to be for the better. He will give up Pakistan if needed for survival.
The nawaz sharif of 97 was much better than who he is now.
