The vice-chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Personal Board and the deputy grand mufti of the state, Nasir ul Islam, has stirred a fresh controversy in the Valley by saying Muslims in India need to demand a separate country for themselves. At a press conference in Srinagar on Tuesday, Nasir said Muslims are being "harassed under various pretexts", a report on Greater Kashmir said.

"India is moving on the path of intolerance. Muslims are being harassed on the various pretexts. Sometimes they are being harassed on the pretext of 'love jihad', sometimes it is cow vigilantism or triple talaq," said Nasir.

He also criticised the BJP-PDP alliance in power in Jammu and Kashmir, saying they have pushed the local population "towards destruction". Reacting to the recent firing by security forces which resulted in the death of two civilians, he said India will have to leave Kashmir some day. "India is an occupier in Kashmir. It can't fool Kashmiris anymore. It has to leave sooner or later," he said.

Nasir has been a controversial figure even before he ascended to the post of the grand mufti. His father Bashir-Ud-Din, the previous grand mufti, had nominated him for the post in July 2012. At the time he was known more for his controversial speeches, like the one given in January 2012, where he issued a fatwa against four pastors, accusing them of "forcible conversions" of Kashmiri youth, reported Hindustan Times at the time.

The report also said that Kashmir has a long history of having revered mufti clans, mainly for the interpretation of Quran and Prophet Muhammad's sayings. However, it said, there is no history of Islamic Sharia courts in the state.

So it begins.
Nations start with an idea...with a statement with a dream and with a vision.
Maybe the Hindu will ignite a spark and that will be that. It won't be nice it will be bloody.

If that happens I bet the trials the Sikhs etc will all rise. India won't be as it is today.

It's not going to happen tomorrow but it will if India continues on the self destruct path

Countries based solely on religion without secular principles have split apart, the best example is Bangladesh from Pakistan.

But if you incorporate secular fundamentals in your constitution then people will be happy to live even as a religious minority in such country, the best example is Israel and India with a large Muslim minority.

What happens when a nation itself becomes a religious extremist nationn. India itself has now become a Hindutva nation.

Nothing is stronger than the idea whose time has come. Honorable Grand Mufti might be a prominent voice but he is neither alone nor the initiator of the idea.... millions of Gangadeshi Muslims are thinking on these lines. That is why it is in Pakistan's long term interests that NAMO continues as PM of Gangadesh

The fact of the matter is if you compare religious extremism in both India and Pakistan, then it is clear that Pakistan suffers much more than India.
So India is much more stable than Pakistan w.r.t religious tensions, although no one can predict what the future holds.

You wish for india to become what Pakistan already is.

I don't think so. India just does a better job of hiding it's crimes. A indian Hindu visitor in Pakistan's conservative area will get a better treatment than a Pakistani Muslim visiting a Hindu conservative area.

Contrary to the world openion if you think India has more religious terrorism than Pakistan then who am I to prove you wrong.

A separate country has been in existence for seven decades, all that needs to be done is to cross over.

Sorry we are full. This is a new wave... Deserves a new space.

Like I said... India has a better publicists... It's government does a better job at promoting "Incredible India".... However, the ground reality is different. Pakistan unfortunately has an incompetent government and a sellout media.

I can give you many examples with countries who had nothing to do with religion are now part of history.

Israel is a Zionist state for your info.

It was inevitable. Election of Modi and the constant rise of Hindu Fascism will be the final nail in the coffin for the project that is "Secular" India if not challaneged. Could have learned an example from your neighbour. Very sad for sensible Indians folks, very few of whom are left on this forum. We wish you well in your battle against religious fascists of all stripes.

Wet dreams kid. Kashmir had see the worst back in 1990's, what is happening now is not even a fraction of what happened during that period. :disagree::disagree::disagree:

Sorry to disappoint you, neither is India "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" nor Kashmir an East Pakistan. We are a predominantly pluralist society. Hope you got my point. :p:

It's just a temporary phenomenon. All the religious fascists will have to eventually go back from where they came (irrespective of religion). Just wait for 2019 election results, you will see the resurgence and emergence of a lot of regional political parties and their eating into the vote share of both BJP and Congress. Mark my words. :)
