Pongal holidays no more compulsory but 'restricted': Central govt

Never in Indian history has pongal been called thanks giving. Stop blasphemising our festival with ridiculous American festivals.

That's like saying happy eid thanks giving

why the need to drag Islam ? Pongal has nothing to do with Indian history , its a Tamil thanks giving to the the Sun god (El) celebrated since the sangam era min 5000BC

Pongal festival is associated with the harvest festival. On this day people thank the rain, sun and the farm animals that have helped in the harvest. Everyone wear new clothes and dress to the finest.

how is thanking the above blasphemous ?

List of Tamil Festivals mentioned in Sangam literature

Festivals[edit]
  • Pongal (பொங்கல்) the festival of harvest and spring, thanking Lord Indiran and Lord El (the sun), comes on January 14/15 (Thai 1).
  • Peru Vaenil Kadavizha, the festival for wishing quick and easy passage of the mid-summer months, on the day when the Sun or El stands directly above the head at noon (the start of Agni Natchaththiram) at the southern tip of ancient Tamil land. This day comes on April 14/15 (Chithirai 1).
  • Mazhai Vizhavu, aka Indhira Vizha, the festival for want of rain, celebrated for one full month starting from the full moon in Ootrai (later name-Cittirai) சித்திரை and completed on the full moon in Puyaazhi (Vaikaasi) (which coincides with Buddhapurnima). It is epitomised in the epic Cilapatikaram in detail.
  • Puyaazhi (Vaikaasi) visaagam and Thai poosam, தைப்பூசம் the festivals of Tamil God [Muruga]'s birth and accession to the Thirupparankundram Koodal Academy, coming on the day before the full moons of Puyaazhi and Thai respectively.
  • Soornavai Vizha, the slaying of legendary Kadamba Asura king Surabadma, by Lord [Muruga], comes on the sixth day after new moon in Itrai (Kaarthigai). It is sung about in Thirumurugatrupadai and Purananuru anthology.
  • Vaadai Vizha or Vadavazhi Vizha, the festival of welcoming the Lord Surya back to home, as He turns northward, celebrated on December 21/22 (Winter Solstice) (the sixth day of Panmizh[Maargazhi]). It is sung about in Akanauru anthology.
  • Semmeen Ezhumin Vizhavu (Aathi-Iřai Darisanam) or Aruthra Darishanam, the occasion of Lord Siva coming down from the ThiruCitrambalam திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் and taking a look at the Vaigarai Thiru Aathirai star in the early morning on the day before the full moon in Panmizh. Aathi Irai min means the star of the God (Siva) on the Bull (Nandi).
  • Thiruonam or Onam, the birthday of Mayon (Lord Vishnu), thiruonam is a group of stars which are bright together and resemble like an eagle. Lord Vishnu's mount is Garuda (eagle), so the day was considered as the birthday of Lord Vishnu by the people of Pandya kingdom and was celebrated for 10 days. That was mentioned in '[Maduraikanji]' one of the 'Pathupaatu' book, 'Thirupallandu' by Periyazhwar and from the song of Thirugnanasambandhar in Thevaram. On this day, Keralites celebrate Onam as the state's harvest festival. Onam is observed for 10 days, ending in Thiruvonam (or Thirounam).

Pongal festival in Singapore and Malaysia: Lee, Najib offer greetings

Pongal is a Thanks Giving festival extensively celebrated in South India.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took to social media platforms to wish Indians on Pongal celebration day on 14 January. Pongal is a Thanksgiving festival which is extensively celebrated in South India and in some places in North India as Makar Sankranti.

The prime minister, while extending the greetings in Tamil, also gave a background of the festival saying that it is celebrated in "Thai", which is the tenth month of the year according to Tamil calendar. Lee gave a brief description of the offering that is prepared during the celebration and revealed that he had learnt the recipe last year.

ok tell us now what is the problem, you dont want the holiday?

ok tell us now what is the problem, you dont want the holiday?

you want me to be explicit ? The problem - India stifles Tamil culture ( refer to Jallikattu ban post #5), while other countries support and promote Tamil culture. A situation similar to Buddhism which was uprooted by Brahmanism in India but revived outside India

why must Tamil keep fighting for their rights and preservation of their culture in India ? This isnt the case in other countries. When matters concerning minorities in imperial India , the govt is quick to enact law to curb their rights using court - e.g triple talaq , Jallikattu etc

Pongal now a compulsory holiday as Centre gives in to Tamil Nadu's demand

Why drag Christianity into this? Thanksgiving is a Christian holiday. Don't make ridiculous hybrid names

Got to love Pakistani logic, like saying India has nothing to do with earth culture .

your logic =

Except for Indians, harvest festival and thanks giving is celebrated by most people around the world. To claim thanks giving is Christian exposes your ignorance or prejudice.

Chu'sok Korean Thanks giving

The Korean Harvest Moon Festival called “Chusok” is over 2,000 years old, but it is now also sometimes referred to as “Korean Thanksgiving” because it is the traditional time for Koreans to thank their ancestors for the year's harvest'.

South India: Pongal, the Harvest Festival

Today, Pongal is a four-part celebration. The first day, Bhogi Pongal, honors Indra, the king of the gods as well as god of the rain and clouds. Families give offerings to Indra so that their harvest is bountiful. The Sun God, Surya Pongal, is honored on the second day with a special dish called sarkkarai pongal and sugarcane sticks. On the third day, known as Mattu Pongal, cowherds and shepherds pay thanks to their cows and bulls, painting and decorating the animals. On Kaanum Pongal, the final day, people travel to see family members to share their crops and give thanks to a successful harvest

United Kingdom: Harvest Festival

Saxon farmers would offer the first cut sheaf of corn and a sacrificial animal to one of their fertility gods to ensure a bountiful harvest. It was thought that the Spirit of the Corn lived in that first cut, and the tradition of making plaited corn dolls to hang in rafters each year began in order to protect the rest of the harvest.

Do you know that last year Pongal was not a holiday at Indian gov offices in Tamil Nadu? You can take the day off as optional holiday if you want but the offices are open and you can go to work. People can go to these offices to conduct business.

Christian America, Canada, Chinese Singapore, Muslim Malaysia etc know, Pongal is a major festival celebrated by Tamil regardless of their religious affiliation. In Tamilnadu is a 4 days affair, Singapore a month long celebration, other parts of the world minimum 2 days festivity.

But you mean to say , colonial Hindu/Hindi Indiá doesn't know Tamil culture and the importance of Pongal to Tamils after having subjugated them for 70 over years ?

Deepavali was never celebrated by Tamils (see post #5 on the festivals celebrated by ancient Tamil) it was introduced into Tamilnadu by the Nayak (Telugu ) rulers, who also paved the way for infiltration of Brahmanism and its evil caste system into Tamilnadu. Tamil priest were replaced by imported Brahmins.

Deepavali celebrates the slaying of Tamil king (either Ravana or Naraka sura) by Aryan invaders and has no place in Tamil culture and history
