Croatia's Defense Ministry will choose between Israeli and Swedish fighter jets to replace its fleet of MiG-21s, Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji List reported on Monday. Croatia plans to purchase 12 aircraft in total.

Israeli secondhand F-16 Barak and Swedish new JAS 39 Gripen were selected for the final round after the American offer of F-16 Bloc 70/72 was too expansive, and the Greek F-16 Block 30 was not good enough, the report adds. The Swedish offer is more expansive since the JAS 39s are new while the Israeli F-16s are 30 years old.

According to Air Recognition, Croatian Defense Minister Damir Krsticevic is scheduled to select the best offer by the end of the month, and then Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic will make a final decision and sign a deal by the end of 2017.

The Gripen is going to win, at least if the Croatians are serious. 30 year old F-16s are going to have a lot of issues, so it's better to just get a newer platform, with a longer life.

What is the price difference between Israel's and Sweden's offer?

. . .
How come older Israeli F-16s are being considered as better option than Greek F-16 Block 30?

US, Greek F-16 bids out as Croatia looks to Israel, Sweden for fighter jet deal
By: Jaroslaw Adamowski

WARSAW, Poland — Croatia’s Ministry of Defence has shortlisted two offers in its tender to purchase 18 fighter jets for the country’s Air Force. These include Israel’s offer to supply the F-16D Barak aircraft and Sweden’s bid to deliver JAS 39 Gripen fighters, a senior government source told local broadcaster RTL Televizija.

The Croatian ministry said last month it received four offers, including bids submitted by the U.S., Israel, Sweden and Greece. The latest development means that the American and Greek offers to supply new or secondhand Lockheed Martin F-16s were discarded.

The Croatian government has been mulling plans to purchase new or secondhand Lockheed Martin F-16s, offered by the U.S., Israel and Greece, or buy Saab JAS 39 Gripens from Sweden. The ministry is expected to make a final decision this year.

The unnamed government official said that new F-16s, with a price tag of about $120 million per aircraft, were evaluated as too expensive by the Croatian government. The planned acquisition is estimated to be worth between €500 million (U.S. $596 million) and €1 billion.

Croatia plans to replace its outdated, Soviet-designed Mikoyan MiG-21 fighter jets with new aircraft. The first jets are to be delivered to the country’s Air Force by late 2020.

30 year old Israeli Netz? Versus Gripen? Really?

Why is this even a debate?

. . . .
Except that the F-16s for sale are F-16A/B ”Netz” with an average of 8,000+ hours in the air.
Not F-16C/D = Block 52 = Barak.
The Israeli proposal also could include a mix of C/D-model aircraft and already-retired F-16A/Bs which it has previously pitched to the Croatian government.

So when did Mig-21s become NATO standard?
NATO countries do not replace old planes that do not meet NATO standard with new planes that do not meet NATO standard.
