DRDO chief Dr S Christopher said the indigenous AEW&C built by DRDO using modified Brazilian Embraer jets is cost effective and better than the Swedish systems owned by Pakistan.

The indigenous airborne early warning and control system (AEW&C) built by Defence Research and Development Organisation using modified Brazilian Embraer jets is cost effective and better than the Swedish systems owned by Pakistan, said DRDO chairman Dr S Christopher at an event in Gujarat University on Thursday.

Giving an insight into various modern technologies being developed for the military, Christopher, delivering the first i-talk organised by Gujarat Innovation Society (GIS), spoke about how DRDO’s AEW&C platform, christened “Netra”, was close to his heart since he was involved in it right from inception. “In 1985, we thought we should make an AWACS (airborne warning and control system) because at that time the US had brought in their own system,” Christopher said while narrating how the DRDO faced teething problems in the project, which also involved a crash.

The DRDO chief said they had gone for a simpler and smaller platform by using the Brazilian Embraer-145 jets when the project was restarted. “It started with a simpler and smaller platform that is the Embraer,” Christopher said, adding how the five-hour endurance of the system was expanded by adding a complex air-to-air refueling facility.

Claiming that the DRDO’s AWACS was cheaper than its Pakistani counterpart, Christopher said except for the aircraft, the electronics was indigenously made. “Except for the aircraft, all the electronics is ours. So when you compare the cost, it is less than what Pakistanis are having; the Swedish system. In addition to that, their aircraft itself is not as good as ours. It is because our is a jet and that is a turboprop,” the DRDO chief said. Pakistan has Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C from Sweden.

Tejas Mark-II to fly by 2022

Speaking of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Christopher said HAL had already got an order to manufacture 123 LCAs. “In addition to that, the air force has given in writing another 201 aircraft, which is the next version, that we call as Mark-II. We are working on it and by 2022 it will be flying,” he said.

and why saab 2000 instead of regional jet, answer is;
they are very cheap, very cheap to operate, long endurance, were in stock, unused.... due to RJ explosion, airliners were giving them up (oil was cheap back in 2000s)...

SAAB 2000 is THE FASTEST turboprop plane ever built, its only 15% slower than modern jet RJ ..it cruise speed is around 420 miles vs around 500 miles for example for ERJ135-145

Hi I think the words of DG DRDO are being twisted to paint an entirely different picture. I think he meant to say that embraer is superior to Saab platform. And that is understandable because embraer is jet powered compared to saab that is turbo prop. Instead of just black and white, both the planes have advantages and disadvantages. For instance while the speed of saab is low, it makes up for that by staying in air much longer than the embraer(almost double!). An embraer would need air refuelling to stay for 9.5 hrs(and thats why it has air refuelling). But if we look at hollistic picture then yes, our platform is superior in the sense that it can stay in air for as long as saab's(thanks to in flight refueling) and has much more speed. As for the AESA radars are concerned, I tend to think that Saab with years of experience would have superior modes of operation vis-a-vis our own L-star. Not to mention the fact that erieye has 192 TRMMs compared to 160 in our LSTAR. However what also matters is the number of T/R modules printed on one TRMM and itz power rating. In India's case, there are 8 printed on one TRMM making a total of 928 T/R modules in total. Whereas if we consider 4(quad channel) for erieye then it will have 768 T/R modules in total(correct me if I am wrong),however if we assume 8 T/R mods in one TRMM then erieye will have 1536 T/R modules in total. Here I would like to point out that one single TRMM is capable of operating at 200W peak which results in a 32kW peak in the case of DRDO AEWCS. I couldnt find similar power figure for erieye, if anyone knows, then kindly write it here with proof! This will roughly indicate which antenna has a higher range.
So, in a nutshell,
1) The platform of DRDO AEWCS is better overall(thanks to aerial refuelling).
2) The erieye might be superior in modes of operation or maturity of algorithms as they have more experience vis-a-vis LRDE in ESAs.
3) Presence of a satcom in DRDO AEWCS which means it can relay itz information to far off command node that erieye in PAF lacks currently.
