India Can Export Fighter Planes, Missiles, Says DRDO Chief

LCA mk2 will be overpriced than its quality, you better look for Mig 35

Nah my friend, we are done with Russian weapons.

F-16 or F-15 is the main target of our government, but we can only obtain 20-30 of these, therefore some LCA mk2's are the best option to fulfill the rest of our needs.

. .
That doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about exports.PAKFA is not inducted in Russian forces yet it already have an export customer.
So is JSF/ F-35......the only export customer for PAKFA is India which invested in the project like PAF did for JF-17.

After it will be fully operational there will be countries willing to come forward to buy it.

New Delhi: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing on the need for increasing arms exports, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has said India can sell combat aircraft and missiles whose production cost would be "much lower" than some of the weapons sold by countries such as China.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander said that the country needs a "policy mechanism" for exporting weapon systems and the defence research agency has suggested a "single window clearance" for sale of arms to friendly foreign countries in a time-bound manner.

"We have a list of equipment that includes the Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas', 'Akash' air defence system, 'Prahar' class of missiles and 'BrahMos' supersonic cruise missiles along with a number of systems that can be exported," he said.

"We are discussing the methodology for developing the export potential as well as a policy mechanism for export of weapon systems," Mr Chander said.

Tejas is a lightweight, multi-role, single-engine tactical fighter aircraft. Akash, a surface-to-air missile, has a range of 25 km.

Prahar is a 150 km-range tactical missile system while BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile with a strike range of 290 km.

Asked about the cost-benefit for countries procuring arms from India, Mr Chander said, "Many times Indian weapons are a lot cheaper.

"There are various other systems, like if you take strategic missiles, the long-range missiles that China sells to Saudi Arabia and the cost at which we produce, it would be one-third or one-fourth," he said.

Mr Chander said, "We can talk only about the price at which people sell and what comes out in published figures about the contracts of the day. By that, our production cost would be much lower. What will be the export cost, that will be the policy decision of the government."

He said for getting into the business of arms exports, the country "needs a framework on what can be exported. It depends on which country, how to protect misuse".

He said there are always a number of issues related to arms exports which need to be addressed.

"What we are suggesting is that there should be a single window clearance system for export of weapons in a timebound manner," the DRDO chief said.

He said several countries have shown interest in the Akash missile system, which was ready to be inducted into the Army.

Mr Chander also said there was a scope for exporting 500-1,000 "cost competitive" indigenously developed LCA Tejas combat aircraft.

LCA is likely to be ready for induction into IAF by the end of this year after attaining the Final Operational Clearance (FOC).

India depends on imports for meeting more than 65 per cent of its weapons requirement and has been branded as largest importer of arms by international think tanks.

So far, India has exported only assault rifles, a few helicopters along with some small naval vessels to friendly foreign countries.

They are not able to develop one single fighter jets for their own Air Force and they are talking about exporting here

. .
Testing and evaluation is one thing, How can India even talk about exporting any fighter jets until the LCA has been inducted into squadron service and made operational.

Problem with IAF is they don't accept a platform unless it is 100% ready. Same with SU 30 MKI, first there were SU 30 MK/SU 30 Ms but IAF refused to use those in large numbers. They held out until MKI came. That was a top end Russian fighter arguably Asia's best.

Imagine this process happening with an Indian made replacement for their beloved MiG 21 BiS. They won't induct it until it is 110% ready for combat. Even F 16 when inducted could not fire BVRAAM missiles until 1989. Tejas is being forced to do it before induction!

Having said that Tejas does have many great feature thta make it stand apart from the rest of it's contemporaries like the F 16 A/B, JF 17, Gripen C/D, etc.

1> High Thrust to Weight Ratio 1:1.07
2> Very Low Wing Loading 50lbs/sqft.
3> Very high thrust engine (89KN with afterburner)
4> Advanced composite usage upto 45% of airframe structure, second highest in any fighter aircraft after Eurofighter
giving it very low overall weight (lightest 4+ Generation Fighter) and high degree of stealth.
5> RCS is effectively 1/3 of Mirage 2000H due to RAM material usage as well as composite usage meaning RCS is 0.3 msq.
6> 8 hardpoints.
7> Mach 2 CAS, Mach 1.6 operable limit.
8> FLIR pod enabled with passive IRST.
9> 150KM for 3/5msq target detection capable ELTA 2032 hybrid radar.
10> All Axis Digital FCS with Quadruplex Computers.
11> Mach 1.1 at sea level.
12> Naval variant under development.
13> 65 % Indigenous Components used.
14> Elbit Systems DASH III Helmet Mounted Display System for targetting using high bore offsight missiles.
15> Very affordable $ 26,000,000 - 28,000,000 only.

Being optimistic is always better than being pessimistic. Let the new Chief feel good for time being.

On serious note .... India has been exporting SOME weapons that include Ballistic protection vests, helmets, ammo, rockets, vehicles, field support equipment/supplies and many more... including Dhruv Helicopter

We already have. We have bagged orders from our Air force and Hell Yeah, you heard it right!! we are now exploring for a potential export. You can do nothing but just feel pity and sad that your nation is just not upto the mark of even developing commercial vehicles. Forget making a jet.

Haha !! Whole world sure knows the truth except for you out of the world beings. We have the toughest and probably very stringent manufacturing and bureaucracy procedures here in India than you would find in any other part of the world and if an indigenous product has to meet the ever changing and growing user requirement, it sure has to pass through a very strict group of Organizations like CEMILAC, DGAQA etc.. and there are quite a few publications by the Center for Military Airworthiness and Certification DRDO. Read it and understand how difficult it is to clear CIMILAC certification than the rest of the world.

If we were to clear the Tejas even before it was proved matured, its canopies probably wouldnt open on time when the pilot needs to, If you know what I mean !!

Is article from 500 years in the future ?
DRDO and export in the same line dont go so well, as compared to DRDO and delays and ya my personal favorite D**K Heads

Even F-16 failed in IAF tests , and that F-16 is your front line fighter ......this says anything... about standard , in some class 40% is pass and in some class only 99.99% is pass ...

Dude!! Get this straight in... DRDO is not exporting weapons for the plain fact that India does not have a defence export policy like other nations. India is now beginning to create a defence export mechanism. About the quality and things we produce, there are buyers for it. Afterall not everyone in this world can afford goodies from 1st world nations.
