India Can Export Fighter Planes, Missiles, Says DRDO Chief

I think first DRDO/HAL should stem all its efforts to induct Tejas-Mk2 in IAF in coming few years. Once done, then we can talk about exports. Still too early to talk about these things.

In coming few years? MK2 is expected to have it's first flight only in 2017. By the time it is inducted we will be in 2022 :D

.
Maybe we should have 2 production lines-HAL for export & private (with some private aerospace company like Mahindra/Tata ).
The money being poured into two lines would be wasteful, because you don't know how many foreign orders you would get, or if you could make the money back. Unless it's war time, there is just no need for two lines.

.
I You We can do many things...do it and then say it in press..! ...People in DRDO and their talk!...I dont know hpw many more decades I am going to read the same stuff.

. . .
There's a reason why I like the Chinese , they do not boast at all , keep their mouths shut , heads down and work hard!

For the same reason you should loathe yourself no end.

Indian market is quite big enough that keep running either Russian and US company and Indian also.

To become big and independent you need to develop things india on the verge major learning curve. US , Russia, EU become big only because they have their development centre , KSA etc didn't developed because they need to buy things. (military products)

Which combat Aircraft can india export? seriously you guys can't even decide to import one in the last 12 years.

New Delhi: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing on the need for increasing arms exports, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has said India can sell combat aircraft and missiles whose production cost would be "much lower" than some of the weapons sold by countries such as China.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander said that the country needs a "policy mechanism" for exporting weapon systems and the defence research agency has suggested a "single window clearance" for sale of arms to friendly foreign countries in a time-bound manner.

"We have a list of equipment that includes the Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas', 'Akash' air defence system, 'Prahar' class of missiles and 'BrahMos' supersonic cruise missiles along with a number of systems that can be exported," he said.

"We are discussing the methodology for developing the export potential as well as a policy mechanism for export of weapon systems," Mr Chander said.

Tejas is a lightweight, multi-role, single-engine tactical fighter aircraft. Akash, a surface-to-air missile, has a range of 25 km.

Prahar is a 150 km-range tactical missile system while BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile with a strike range of 290 km.

Asked about the cost-benefit for countries procuring arms from India, Mr Chander said, "Many times Indian weapons are a lot cheaper.

"There are various other systems, like if you take strategic missiles, the long-range missiles that China sells to Saudi Arabia and the cost at which we produce, it would be one-third or one-fourth," he said.

Mr Chander said, "We can talk only about the price at which people sell and what comes out in published figures about the contracts of the day. By that, our production cost would be much lower. What will be the export cost, that will be the policy decision of the government."

He said for getting into the business of arms exports, the country "needs a framework on what can be exported. It depends on which country, how to protect misuse".

He said there are always a number of issues related to arms exports which need to be addressed.

"What we are suggesting is that there should be a single window clearance system for export of weapons in a timebound manner," the DRDO chief said.

He said several countries have shown interest in the Akash missile system, which was ready to be inducted into the Army.

Mr Chander also said there was a scope for exporting 500-1,000 "cost competitive" indigenously developed LCA Tejas combat aircraft.

LCA is likely to be ready for induction into IAF by the end of this year after attaining the Final Operational Clearance (FOC).

India depends on imports for meeting more than 65 per cent of its weapons requirement and has been branded as largest importer of arms by international think tanks.

So far, India has exported only assault rifles, a few helicopters along with some small naval vessels to friendly foreign countries.

same with you , let from last 7 years Pak poster is waiting for J-10/11 and Chinese Subs from china also.....India is making 5th Gen Plane along with Russia , so ppl evaluating to go for all 5gen for 4.5 Gen... India has money and deep pocket to but things.

.
Forget about LCA , you F-16 was failed in Tests, and F-16 is your frontline best plane.... don't know what is standard of PAF is , by this can understand what is standard of PAF is , whose best plane is F-16 which failed in Indian evaluations ;)
So you think your IAF has better standards than several dozen air forces around the globe which operate the F-16s.
Suffice to remind you that the MiG-21, which IAF flies till this day was rejected by PAF when offered by Soviets back in 1969. Every air force has it's ow requirements, the Eurofighter Typhoon didn't meet PAF's mission specification thus it was rejected , does that mean it's a low grade aircraft...... may i remind you the F-16 is the most successful aircraft of the modern day with an unmatchable combat record.... what battle honours does the MKI or others in IAF service have under their belt. !!!

Eurofighter is rejected:eek::eek::eek: Ohh my god if our mod have pockets they would have jumped to buy it it:D:D:confused: @sancho Is it true;););)As for F-16 record it's always against substandard AF

.
Because just like Jf 17 its still in the same phase. One is inducted as they don't have any options to replace while another got alot and want LCA to be full fledged warmachine not some half cooked cookie without BVR or refuelling pod.
You think if IAF had a choice, they wouldn't jump to the chance of replacing the MiG-21s.
We recently replaced a squadron of F-7s, which is similar to your MiG-21s with not JF-17s but F-16s.
