NEW DELHI: India may become a power surplus country in the current fiscal as the energy shortage and peak power deficit was already less than 1% in April with many states reporting nil electricity deficit.

According to Central Electricity Authority's latest monthly report for April, the energy shortage in the country is reported at 0.5 per cent during the month compared to 1.4 per cent a year ago.

In April, the energy shortage was as low as 0.1 per cent each in Western, Southern and Eastern region. However the Northeastern region has reported energy shortage of 4.5 per cent. It was 1.5 per cent in the Northern region.

Peak power deficit too has reduced to 0.8 per cent across the country in April this year. It was recorded at 0.1 per cent each in Southern, Eastern and Western regions.

However, the Northeastern region reported a peak power deficit of 2.2 per cent in April. It was 1.8 per cent in Northern region.

As per the Power Ministry data, many states have reported nil energy shortage and peak power deficit in April this year.

These states include Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim and Tripura, West Bengal.

There are other states where energy shortage (ES) and peak power deficit (PPD) has been up to 1 per cent in April. They are: Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh (PPD zero), Jharkhand (PPD zero), Maharashtra, Meghalaya (ES zero), Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana (ES zero), Uttarakhand (PPD zero).

Uttar Pradesh, where BJP recently won elections with a thumping majority, reported an energy shortage of just 1 per cent in April from 14 per cent level a year ago. Besides, the peak power deficit was down to zero.

According to the load generation balancing report of the Central Electricity Authority for 2017-18, India would become power surplus nation.
It said, "All India power supply position indicates that the country is likely to have a peak surplus of 6.8 per cent and energy surplus of 8.8 per cent."It also said that surplus energy is anticipated in the order of 7.4 per cent, 13 per cent, 9.8 per cent and 3.0 per cent in the Southern, Western, Northern and North-Eastern Regions respectively.
However it said that the Eastern region is likely to face minor energy shortage of 0.2 per cent which can be met through surplus power in other regions.

It has also said that the peaking surplus is likely to prevail in all the regions-- Northern, Western, Southern, Eastern and North-Eastern regions to the tune of 6.7 per cent, 17.2 per cent, 1 per cent, 10 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively.

.
we should sell the surplus electricity to pak :P

. .
Energy is cruicial in this era and producing it as much as required is even more important.its a good sign that indian gov is filling the pool to its top.

There is a difference between installed capacity and actual production...one third of India population is without electricity according to Indian media.

India has power plants with capacity to generate 300 GW. These are operating at 64% capacity because of inability of state distribution utilities to purchase electricity and sluggish economic growth.

What's the point?
So many people have no electricity at all or have not stable provision of electricity or very low per capita consumption of electricity.....
You can open a dam in a place where no people can afford electricity, then claim that place has power surplus....

Transmission loss is a serious concern...... LeD can reduce the load to a great extent..... this is @anant_s forte

It is. Ask Powergrid or our State Transmission Companies.
however we are investing very heavily in 765 kV EHVAC and 500/800 kV HCDC circuits and these have started to show results.
we must remember each unit of electricity is generated with around 3 units of heat wasted (thanks to Rankine cycle working). So for each unit of electricity lost, we are actually wasting much higher thermal energy making it environmentally even more burdensome (larger emissions).
Therefore grid and distribution infra modernization is about as much important as new power projects, if not more.

Unfortunately our hydel resources are concentrated in Himalayan region where there is little or no industry. However new transmission lines being laid out are helping us out in this regard.

Cant agree more..... Whats your thought on extensive usage of Led bulbs? I know electricity boards are providing subsidized bulbs.... But why not subsidize the entire LED bulbs produced?
Another issue is out dated Home appliances, Especially the refrigerators/TV/Air conditioners, They consume double the power of the latest one.... Govt should look in that aspect as well....

Barring 6 states and Chandigarh, India to turn power surplus this fiscal

NEW DELHI: Most parts of the country will have surplus power availability in the current financial year thanks to higher electricity generation, the Central Electricity Authority said. The apex power sector planning body said in a report that in 2017-18, there will be anticipated energy surplus of 8.8 per cent and peak-hour surplus of 6.8 per cent.

While the eastern region will be able to meet its demand almost in full, other four regions will have surplus power varying from 3 per cent to 13 per cent, the report released on Monday said.

Barring six states and a union territory, all other parts of the country will be power surplus on average during the year, as per the data based on gap between electricity requirement stated by states and electricity availability.

However, the data does not reflect the true power outages scenario in states that may choose to shed load due to financial inabilities or technical failure. The report said that overall the country recorded the lowest ever demand-supply gap of 0.7 per cent in 2016-17, both in terms of energy and peaking.

“Even this demand-supply gap was due to factors other than non-availability of power in the country,” it said.

The load generation balance report for 2016-17 had, however, predicted a national average power surplus of 1.1 per cent in that year. There will be surplus energy in a number of states in the southern and western regions while some demand-supply gap is likely to be experienced by some states, mostly in northern, eastern and north-eastern regions, the report for 2017-18 said.

In peak hours, power surplus is likely to prevail in all the regions — 6.7 per cent in northern, 17.2 per cent in western, 1 per cent in southern, 10 per cent in eastern and 5 per cent in north-eastern region.

This is the feat by GOI while state gov. are to blame for electricity thefts, transmission loss or even not buying electricity for them. And states like UP comes first in this list but new BJP state gov. is trying to change that now.
