Is it hardly a news anymore in political circles of our idiotic countrymen? From your source I quote:
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto took over power on December 21, 1971 and on January 1, 1972 his government promulgated the Nationalization and Economic Reforms Order nationalizing 31 key industrial units, completely wiping out BECO. The company’s name was changed to PECO (Pakistan Engineering Company). Like other nationalised companies, PECO did not cut it and by 1998, it had run up an acknowledged accumulated loss of Rs 761.58 billion. In October 1977, Gen Zia-ul-Haq offered to return control of the company to Mr Latif and his management. Mr Latif refused to accept the offer unless the same were extended to owners of all nationalised industries.

It is such a sad thing that in the name of the country Mr.Bhutto ruined what was something to be proud of as a Pakistani. Had BECO remained with its owners we would have put Tata and Birla to shame. Govt abandoned the factory, sold out tons and tons of steel in the building structer and , and now what is left of it ,is an Industrial graveyard.

In reality Bhutto never took over power in 1971 democratically, as it was Awami League of Mujeeb-ur-Rehman that had actually won 1970's General Elections by winning overall majority vote in National Assembly. Yet the establishment of the time REFUSED to hand him political power which was his democratic right. Arrogant generals?
I ask this silly question to this day that if there was no intention of our establishment to recognize the outcome of Pakistan's first and only free & fair election, why the HECK did they allow party based elections in the first place?

Please focus on economic side in this thread.

Thank you.

Thank you.

There is no economic side to it. In the 70's when Bhutto enforced his socialist principles on entire Pakistani nation, socialist-communist Soviet Union and China had already become economic graveyards. Yet he implemented these reforms without even considering what similar reforms had led to in other countries? It means he was even a bigger fool than current Noora.

Islamo-socialism single handedly destroyed Pakistani industry back in 1972.

Read the following and cry.

Also see how Chinese PM wanted to send Chinese engineers to Pakistan for training.

And now we beg Chinese for money. Scroll down the linked article and see the pictures of Chinese, Japanese, and Germans at BECO.

Utterly sad

I think Pakistan should focus in future planning .Past is past ,you cant bring back that time and opportunity.
Pakistan have enough manpower and resources .All you need is reshuffled planning commission (or its equivalent).
Allocate money for industry not only for private industry but also public industry .Huge funding in power sector will electrifed you industrial demands..

I wouldn't make too much of that: Mao had dumped many of China's engineering professors as part of the Cultural Revolution, severed most Soviet connections, and not yet established cultural ties with the West. So China's options for training new engineers were for a time very limited.

Every thing is time limited.

Time is unlimited for only dead people.

I read history of BECO few years ago. Its unbelievable how naive our people are. Bhutto highhandedly ruined this country. Besides economic damage, he is also responsible for Zia's marshal law, thus derailing democracy for a long time. He acted like a dictator, set bad governance precedents, sidelined minorities, introduced this pseudo "Islamic Socialism", mishandled Baloch insurgency and so on. And yet somehow his false legacy lives on.

Pakistani Motor Car

Don't know how much of it is fiction and how much is truth, but an interesting read anyways,

//

Was just going through the immage gallery when I came across a thread regarding a donkey/car jokingly labelled as Pakistan's First Car.

Here's some very important news for you.

Pakistan was the the First Islamic Country in the world which made a 4 Wheel Drive Jeep of its own in late 60's called NAYA DAUR in collaboration with WILLIS jeep.

Pakistan was the First Islamic Country in the world which was about to manufacture its own Motocycles in early 70's with the collaboration of JAVA motorcycle but the process was soon abandoned.

Pakistan was the First Islamic Country in the world which had made its own prototype Diesel Engines by the Lahore based company called BECO (Battala Engineering Company).

And last but not the least;

Pakistan really was the First Islamic Country in the world which actually made a Motor Car of its own in early 70's with the collaboration of SKODA Motors. It was named SKOPAK. The prototypes had been made, the production was about to be started soon, but alas.......

The 1971 war with the separation of East Pakistan, had its toll in each and every aspect. The country met an economic shock, the economic readjustments by Mr Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, lead to a stagerring 127% (approx)depriciation in the value of Pakistani Ruppee. All the industries were Nationalised and...

The production of NAYA DAUR jeeps was stopped as their production in the country was not cost effective by then.

The Motorcycle project was blown to pieces.

The BECO was nationalised and was converted into PECO (Pakistan Engineering Company) which instead of making Diesel Engines was put on manufacturing PECO Bicycles......

And SKOPAK CAR project died forever.

Dear Countrymen, it is my extremely humble request. Please do not make fun of your country. Yes I admit we have a lot of shortcomings, but who has'nt.

Please, take care of this country as it has been caring for all of us. Instead of making fun, just try to figure out What went wrong and where?

You can well imagine that Pakistan was way ahead in late 60's then most of the Asian Giants, and the proof of its greatness is that although...

Pakistan could not continue the production of its Jeeps, although

Pakistan could not start the manufacturing of its own Motorcycles, although

Pakistan could not continue with its production of Diesel Engines, & although

Pakistan could not continue its project of SkoPak Cars, yet it succeeded in doing something which only 6 countries in the world had done before, i.e.,

PAKISTAN ACHIEVED THE DISTINCTION OF BECOMING ISLAMIC WORLDS FIRST AND WORLDS SEVENTH NUCLEAR POWER.....

LONG LIVE PAKISTAN, LONG LIVE PAKSITANIS AND LONG LIVE PAKISTANIAT.

Love for all the Pakistanis.

Good points.

I won't pick on individual projects.

Instead let me allow to mention general trend or trends.

China and India and S Korea are doing well economically today in 2014. You know why?

---- Outsourcing of goods and services from the West during 1990s

Pakistan was doing well in 1960s. you know why?
---- Outsourcing of goods and services from the West during 1950s

Thus we were about 40 years ahead of China and India and S korea

Thanks to Islamo-socialism, now we are 40 years behind.

Bhutto made huge mistakes, he was charismatic and almost nothing else. Personally I am in favour of having some degree of socialism, especially in departments such as education and health care, however there's a big, fat line between reasonable socialist policies and completely retarded ones. ZAB managed to make his already bad idea of 'Islamo Socialism' (there's nothing Islamic about it) even worse by stupid timing and horrible execution.

Another example of the damage caused by wrong priorities and greedy leaders. Pathetic that people are still being fed the 'Bhutto legacy'. Even worse that those people actually believe it.

But we must also understand that just because this 'Islamic Socialism' failed doesn't mean the exact opposite of it would work. If nationalizing everything didn't work, doesn't mean privatizing everything would. In cases like this, the middle-ground approach is usually the most effective one.

'Nationalize' (to some extent) the healthcare and education departments (encouraging private ones by using subsidies etc is a good idea but a socialist system for these would be best in the long term, like in the UK or the Scandinavian countries), maintain some level of control over private companies (taxation, quality control, inspections) while supporting industries, entrepreneurs and private companies' growth (i.e do not go overboard with the 'control' part).

Unfortunately there is no room for reason in politics. Every politician will do whatever gives him the most power. There is no difference between a hardcore socialist and an industrialist when both of them will result in the same thing - loss to Pakistan.
