F-35 poses a danger to the Liaoning but can’t defeat it alone: expert
SOURCE: WANTCHINATIMES
Wang Mingzhi, a military strategist from the People’s Liberation Army Air Force Command College has said the F-35, the United States’ second fifth-generation stealth fighter may pose a serious threat to China’s air defenses, but it will not be able to easily destroy Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, during a battle, reports our sister newspaper, Want Daily.
During the interview, Wang said that China should pay attention to the development of the F-35 since it is better than most of the PLA Air Force and Navy’s fighters. It can be very dangerous to China’s air defenses. Rumor even has it thatn the F-35 is capable of destroying the Liaoning with a single anti-ship missile fired from 290 kilometers away. However, Wang said that it is impossible for an F-35 or any other type of aircraft to sink an aircraft carrier all by itself.
He said that the Liaoning nor any of China’s future aircraft carriers will operate alone in the open sea. It is more likely to be escorted by other types of warships in a carrier battle group. With the assistance of destroyers and cruisers, the chances for the Liaoning’s battle group to shoot down and defeat F-35 fighters in combat has increased. The F-35’s missile can be intercepted by the medium-range air defense systems equipped by those surface combat vessels.
If the missiles do successfully break through the air defense systems of the Chinese destroyers and cruisers, the close-in weapons systems aboard those vessels can still serve as the last line of defense line for the Liaoning. Wang still contends though, that the fifth-generation fighters can be pretty dangerous to China’s air defense especially after Japan begins to receive F-35s from the United States. Other allies of the US in the Western Pacific are likely to purchase the aircraft very soon.
