Dawood comes forward to protect Lalit Modi
New Delhi, Apr 14: In a new twist to the Shashi Tharoor-Lali Modi spat in the wake of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kochi controversy, the office of Minister of State for External Affairs has revealed that Tharoor has received death threat from the notorious D-company.
Quoting sources, media reports say that the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's gang has threatened the minister against causing trouble to the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and to stay clear of him.
The minister's office has informed the Home Ministry on the death threats.
The controversy over the ownership of IPL Kochi team turned into a fight between the minister and the IPL chief after Modi revealed the names of the owners of the consortium that bought the franchisee and alleged that Tharoor had asked him to not to ask who the shareholders were.
While a lot of questions were raised against the minister over the mention of Sunanda Pushkar, who he is romantically linked with, the Tharoor released a statement on Tuesday, Apr 13 saying that Modi and others tried to pressure the consortium members to abandon their bid in favour of another city in a different state.
However, the death threat from Dawood raises the question if the underworld don too has a stake in the IPL. This may be the right time for Lalit Modi to come clean and disclose the shareholding with the public.
