Tofail hints at ban on Pak book on Liberation War

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed on Thursday hinted at a possible ban on the entry of a book, ‘Creation of Bangladesh: Myths Exploded’ written by a Pakistani writer to Bangladesh.
The book would not come to the country, he said while talking to reporters at the ministry after a meeting with the visiting business leaders of West Bengal of India.
Written by Junaid Ahmad, the book was published recently in Pakistan.
Tofail said that the book contained false and fabricated information about genocide, number of martyrs and torture of women by the Pakistani army during the country’s War of Independence in 1971.
He said that they came to know about the book after several copies were handed over to the Bangladesh High Commission in Pakistan.
On Wednesday, ruling Awami League lawmakers, including prime minister Sheikh Hasina, strongly condemned the contains of the book during a discussion in parliament. Hasina said that she would ask the foreign ministry to lodge official protest against the contents of book.
Responding to a question, Tofail said that the government of Pakistan owned the book as Inter Service Intelligence sent the copies of the book to the Bangladeshi High Commission in Pakistan.
The ISI is the main intelligence agency of Pakistan, he said, adding that ISI tried to cause damage to Bangladesh on many occasions in the past.

Dr Ahmad is an academic and researcher and a member of the Karachi Council of Foreign Relations (KCFR) that organised the event to mark the fall of Dhaka.

There can be multiplicity of views. It is childish to ban things. Intellectual rigiour should be the only barometer to explore and "debunk" such views.

Just because a view exist it does not need to be quashed or need anything to be done about it.

If people does not like it just move on. Exaggerated reaction will merely legitimise and give views possibly unmerited undeserved gravitas.

Thing is, Awami League has little political capital other than the events of 1971 that it has colorfully decorated with the help of GoI. Have to agree. Its about time BD public are not cocooned in sheltered existence about 1971. Perspectives from other side must be given space and freedom to be explored.

But people here have told me you can be prosecuted if you question the 3 million number for 1971 openly....thus BAL govt is simply acting as part of that whole agenda it seems. This is quite a dishonest and elitist thing to do.

Have you read Sarmila Bose "Dead reckoning" BTW? I would imagine its a similar vein to that. I will try search for the pdf of this recent book later.

Do you know if Sarmila Bose book is banned as well in BD?
