  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Parliament on Tuesday that 60% to 70% of the German population could contract the coronavirus.
  • Merkel’s dropping the figure at the outset of a parliamentary meeting left the room silent, according to a report from Bild, a German newspaper.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave a grave prognosis to Parliament on Tuesday, telling members that 60% to 70% of the German population could contract the coronavirus at some point, according to Bild.

The German newspaper reported that when Merkel dropped the statistic in the parliamentary meeting, the room fell silent.

Germany has more than 1,400 cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, with two confirmed deaths.

Merkel went on to tell lawmakers that more events and large gatherings could be canceled, depending on the severity of the outbreak.

Postponing parliamentary proceedings is also a possibility, Merkel said.

According to Bild, Merkel came short of calling for any swift and severe measures and was not more specific but laid out the possibilities facing the nation amid the outbreak.

The coronavirus has rapidly spread throughout Europe. Italy, the worst-hit country outside China, instituted a nationwide lockdown this week, as more than 9,100 people have been infected and at least 463 people have died from the virus.

That's total defeatism, if they give up that disaster could really happen, quarantine the country now they still have a chance to contain it.

I think a balance needs to be struck between quarantine and allowing normal economic and social life to continue.
Those most at risk will be over the age of 70 and so they should try to self isolate as much as possible.
Rest of the population should take precautions like avoiding unnecessary social interaction for normal survival and wash hands frequently during the day.
Only if it becomes really severe then an Italy style lockdown will come into effect.

Many died in China were between 35-55, even some young doctors and nurses died, don't believe being relatively young will make you safe.

China’s own stats say the death rate only went above 1% for those 70 and above.
Young doctors and nurses are more at risk than general population as they probably keep getting infected multiple times from the sick patients.

This rate is very low in Germany. Officially there are around 2750 infected patients and the number of deaths to date, just 5. Mortality rates can be reduced as long as there is a sufficient number of intensive care units and respiratory support devices. Because the treatment methods on the disease are progressing. The actual problem is that exceeding total intensive care capacity and then collapse all health system with overload. Therefore, if the pace of the epidemic can be slowed, mortality rate will be low. However, if it will completely out of control, death rates will be higher than the numbers you mentioned.
