Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

As long as we don't know the specific reasons behind this decision I won't criticize the plan. People in the Defence Industry aren't idiots. They actually do know that these production numbers are too small. Maybe they want to implement experiences they made in Syria into a modified concept. Or the government is currently negotiating with British companies about a future engine.

I'm not even sure whether we need 1000 new tanks at the moment.

50 tank per year would be a good production rate. 2020-2021 are propably low rate production phase while serial production line is being tested.

We will buy +- 1000 tanks.

Production must go on for at least 30/40 years, to not to close the line.

1000/30 = ~35 in a year... in early years it is normal ~20.. then production will be 40 per year.

They call it : sürdürülebilir üretim..

Economically it makes sense, what is Otokar for example supposed to do with its workers when it has a output of 5 tanks a day after 2 years? People have to be employed.

Maybe they're even waiting for BMC and Rheinmetall to set up production capacities in Turkey to go for a new tender. This way we have more competition and an evidently lower unit price. Is this possible?

BMC is not ready for mass production.
At that moment only Otokar can produce tanks in big numbers.

Althought how many Leos have been produced for Bundeswehr?
Export of tanks is more important than sell your own army.

Well with that "number" they ain't gonna use that for export either. Those numbers are way to weak...

Where do you know that? Do you has any detail informations of that contract?

You can ignore one of the biggest company on its country.
"The tank will benefit both from indigenously developed systems and from the cannon technology of the South Korean K2 Black Panther, accorded by an agreement signed with South Korea. The candidates for the engine are German MTU Friedrichshafen and the new South Korean engine which is currently under development."

Some Turkish sources claim that Roketsan can deliver very limited number of armor packages for Altay per month and that also British Perkins Diesel CV12 1,120 kW (1,500 bhp) is under consideration.

Altay requires a denser powerpack..

I would say the Ukrainian 6-TD engine especially the 6-TD3/4 versions with 1400/1800 hp
But not just licence production,an improvement of these engines with Turkish improvements. But which Turkish company would be able to achieve this?

Ok. Suggestions from your side except MTU? Perkins was tested on Abrams and Pakistans Al Kalid.

Dunno, something similar in size to

MTU-890

If that numbers are correct, Turkish defence industry is losing energy and time or Altay Tank project is utterly planned to export which is very very accretive,in contrast this tank designed for initial user upgrade to heavy battlefield tank later on.

So is Altay a fiasco or not? Why is this project going forward so slow?

When u check out Turkish FNNS products, for example Light Tank project with Indonesia. Does Turkey really need Altay Light Tank Project ?

Altay Tank project should upgrade to heavy battlefield tank.
