Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources Eng. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih on Saturday visited the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) during his current visit to South Korea.
Al-Faleh met with Saudi engineers from King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, participants in the design of the compact reactor (SMART). There are currently 48 Saudi engineers in South Korea's Daejeon city who have started a joint venture with KAERI to prepare the engineering designs for the SMART reactor With extensive training programs in various areas of nuclear power, including specialized programs in reactor core design, fluid system design, mechanical design, machine interaction design and safety analysis of SMART reactor technology.
Eng. Al-Falih listened to a simplified presentation of the activities and achievements of the Saudi team during the last period. He also toured the Institute and the research center where he visited the Integrated Testing Center and the simulation room for the SMART reactor.
The Smart project with South Korea is one of the components of the National Atomic Energy Project, which was approved by the Saudi Council of Ministers last year in order to introduce peaceful atomic energy into the national energy mix and contribute to the provision of sustainable national development requirements according to the ambitious vision of the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia aim from the SMART project is the settlement of nuclear knowledge and support value chains and the Kingdom's entry as a developer, owner and future source of nuclear energy technologies.
