Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources Eng. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih on Saturday visited the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) during his current visit to South Korea.

Al-Faleh met with Saudi engineers from King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, participants in the design of the compact reactor (SMART). There are currently 48 Saudi engineers in South Korea's Daejeon city who have started a joint venture with KAERI to prepare the engineering designs for the SMART reactor With extensive training programs in various areas of nuclear power, including specialized programs in reactor core design, fluid system design, mechanical design, machine interaction design and safety analysis of SMART reactor technology.

Eng. Al-Falih listened to a simplified presentation of the activities and achievements of the Saudi team during the last period. He also toured the Institute and the research center where he visited the Integrated Testing Center and the simulation room for the SMART reactor.

The Smart project with South Korea is one of the components of the National Atomic Energy Project, which was approved by the Saudi Council of Ministers last year in order to introduce peaceful atomic energy into the national energy mix and contribute to the provision of sustainable national development requirements according to the ambitious vision of the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia aim from the SMART project is the settlement of nuclear knowledge and support value chains and the Kingdom's entry as a developer, owner and future source of nuclear energy technologies.

Korea and Saudi Arabia Execute Nuclear Power Plant Deal

kpride, March 4, 2015, 8:32 a.m.

Korea and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding on the sale of at least two nuclear power plants to the Middle Eastern country. Both sides will conduct feasibility studies by 2018 and build two System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor or SMART plants at an estimated cost of US$2 billion. They then hope to sell such plants to third countries.

They will also set up university programs in the country to train reactor technicians. Developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the SMART reactor is the world's smallest nuclear reactor, just one tenth the size of a conventional facility, and was designed primarily for export.

The MOU marks the second export contract for SMART reactors. The first was signed by former President Lee Myung-bak with the United Arab Emirates in 2009. A Cheong Wa Dae official said, "Saudi Arabia plans to build 12 to 18 nuclear power plants by 2040, and the first order could be placed as early as next year."
