Workmanship on HAL Tejas Still Poor

These latest image taken recently at Dubai Air Show indicate that the workmanship and finishing on Indian HAL Tejas Fighter aircraft still remains very average. Remember this was the show piece aircraft on static display which any potential customer would have looked at closely.

Can you dispute any of the claims?

Also nobody is criticising individual mechanical parts just the shoddy way it is put together. You should be concerned too because if all of the tejas fleet is like this, then a lot of planes will be grounded.

You complaining about me making threads with images...well one can't really blame you as you people are accustomed to your Agni Pankh Patils taking you for a ride with colourful cranes graphics. :lol:
Why would anyone need to do any propganda when the whole world saw your warlords holding up a piece of AMRAAM and crying like a kid who has lost his Actionman toy.
HAL may very well be making those parts but making them and fixing them is like you deploy the Spyder Sam, but then how you used it is another Indian exclusive.

Dispute based on what? Based on Jammers pictures and he was able to make out bad workmanship? I still don't understand the issue in the image of jet inlet danger image.

Other images are normal wear and tear. The Tejas mostly shown in air shows are LSP ones and they are test aircrafts for ADA/HAL. Sometimes IAF brings their aircrafts which are newer ones. The image doesn't even show the tail number from which one can determine if it's an production Ac or test aircrafts.

The panels are supposed to be replaced every now and then after they get weared out. I don't see it as an issue. If anyone, our IAF loves to beat down HAL for any issues. They would be the first to bring it any minor issues to the core. If they have no problem with it, then I don't.

This is not an endorsement of HAL. But HAL has made rapid strides in the last 7-8 years to improve its quality, accountability and tracking etc. And that will be recognized. Boeing and Airbus do routinely do their own assessment for license renewals to certify HAL is still good enough to produce parts for their manufacturing.

Got an American powerplant, which is important for safety. Rough appearance is acceptable.

Bhai, this is a fighter aircraft, epitome of Bhartiya high tek-na-lajee.

Not a Dhaka City bus literally rubbing panels with other lakree-wallah buses.

Of course - looking at the High IQ people who put these together, one would be led to believe such circumstance....

These days, Car panel gaps have tolerances measured in millimetres, and this is a friggin' fighter aircraft.

Don't these people have vernier calipers/micrometers - forget laser tolerance measurement devices?

Yup, HAL at it's best, maybe this is the reason the SU-30s have stopped crashing, as the saying goes. If they don't fly, they don't die.

Just FYI, PIA’s Precision Engineering Complex has been manufacturing parts for GE, Airbus and Boeing since the 80s, don’t know how this mitigates the visibly shoddy workmanship seen in the images above.

How would wear and tear affect the welding on the body, or the ill fitting canopy as someone else pointed out. Also considering these are supposed to be new-ish and well cared for (as they are rolled out for an airshow), these defects shouldnt be there at all.

These are aircraft which will experience enormous amounts of stress and strain and undergo massive temperature changes. The way the frame fits together in the photographs is very poor.

Either HAL is assembling substandard aircraft, or the IAF is butchering them with shoddy maintainence.

Damn it's not just the main body or undersides that show signs of poor craftsmanship cutting corners on finishing, even the canopy frame looks as if it belongs to a different aircraft.

HAL will be upset that we criticized.

This is their best example sent for the airshow.

Only Allah knows what the rest look like...

Actually - why would it matter - they will fall out of the sky by themselves in any case, or be quick ack-ack fodder...

Goes without saying. The whole world including the indians themselves are not inducting the tejas in to their airforces. In fact, 1.4 billion indians are spending billions buying russian and french fighter jets. That means the indians have 0 faith in their own products......... :azn:

I didn't wanted to start some stick measuring as you can see the Indian fan boys are digging up their ancestors to defend the lost cause.....they don't even have the brains to comprehend the difference between design or craftmanship. No one said anything about Tejas design flaws rather the topic is the average workmanship and the poor finishing of the product.....as for JF-17, one can pick any random picture for comparison, interestingly both the Thunder and Tejas are armed with similar 23mm gun but look at the quality of work and finishing on JF-17 compared to the Indian aircraft. The JF-17 image is well over 10 years old

This is no accident. Panels on a JF-17 are either chemically etched or laser-etched. Aircraft manufactured everywhere (except India, looks like), use these methods for aerospace manufacture.

Without going into excess verbosity - one can clearly say that the QA and tolerance in manufacture is very sub-par in Indian manufactured fighter Aircraft. I mean - making slap-'em-together Dhaba da chapatti is one thing, but this is a fighter aircraft operating in very demanding environments. Only if one expects this machine (and the occupant) to be expendable, then it makes sense.

Just look how long it took to develop the Tejas. It also shows how bad India's defense PSUs are performing. Pakistan not only incorporated the JF-17s but are exporting the aircraft while the Tejas still flounder.
There were other issues that were highlighted by senior Indian members many years ago as well. The key term is again “Project management” - when you components HAL receives from local suppliers come damaged or transported in relative donkey carts then they too will be limited in what they can do to clean it up and put it together.
No concept of supply chain Q&A and over emphasis on getting bureaucratic stamps on files rather than truly looking at it as a pride of the nation and ensuring it shines. Nothing in characteristic that is isolated to India as issues but since this is an Indian product so speaking to that perspective.

Having worked with India PSU’s in a separate project for a refinery in the south all it took was an honest project leader and the result was very different (at least until that gentleman was in charge). Their tender process took less than 30 days to complete with none of the insider info or kickbacks - just plain SoWs, requirements and clean bidding to sale and training. Actual equipment sale of $325000 was done within 35 days but I heard that follow up spares and ancillary equipment took 6 months because leadership changed to more bureaucratic fellow.
