What's new

Saudi Arabia expresses interest in JF-17 co-production with Pakistan.

There were rumors that Block-II will have nose modifications and even lower RCS but now I think has been shifted to block-III - or - stealth nose is entirely different program..? No information on that and Allah knows the Best!
IMO AESA is the current need, rest comes later, what do you say?..... Also stealth features were supposed to be in Block ||| and not the second so things seem to be on schedule for now, plus if deal with the Arabs is successful(or any other country for that matter), it will provide further boost to the program.

There's a certain level for that granted because of your huge order . I am really doubtful about any " full technology transfer " on licensed production - that ai'nt the norm . Anyways , discuss the thread .

If you are talking in reference to JFT, it is a modular platform. It was designed considering sanctions in mind.
Any avionics can be fitted, even various engines can be fitted. Any buyer has great deal of flexibility.
It also come with state of art, modern maintenance package, which is a big attraction.
ToT is never required, it is maintenance and source codes of avionics, which matters most and JFT is going to offer a competition and forcing other manufacturers to be competitive.

We are getting ahead of ourselves here. Let us first see what happens with JF-17, because all this news is based on conjectures at this point. I wish our hopes become reality, but we must not rush to conclusions AND start dreaming of next big thing.

Any new stealth project should also have Turkish participation and Chinese advisory role, if possible. But all this is Off Topic. Let us open another thread in appropriate section.

If you won't dream high you won't reach high.

And yes i agree this is off topic.

The whole idea of KSA supporting, JFT development, is that there is no more trust in west. It's not about perception of superior tech. it's about having an equipment you can trust, of being bug free.
Perhaps you should tell us where does JFT avionics lag behind?

China is still behind in tech from west and they are already lagging in producing system in quality & numbers just to fulfill their own requirements which are huge, because they see them as new emerging super power which is what world also see them, therefore it is not easy for them to fill the requirements of their allies so easily which demand high end stuff, for that funds and technical assistance will be required from allies too, which at least Pakistan is in no position to do now.

JF-17 still lacks an state of the art AESA radar which now becoming standard of advance air forces even LCA will have it soon, JF-17 radar and avionics are bit behind from LCA which have direct western inputs which we don't have it also have better engine then JF-17 so much work is needed to be done to make it a deadly predictor.

.
AESA is no benchmark, KLJ is equivalent to the APG radars in Saudi inventory.
Neither JFT represent China or its tech. but having said that China is far ahead in tech.
JFT on its own is modular, if KSA has AESA on offer they can have it fitted, and as mentioned earlier other engines are also available, what's next?

Another Pakistani source is talking about it now:

Saudi Arabia may buy JF-17 Thunder jets

You may need to check out the Diplomat as well even though that I don't trust them:

J-10B has a redesigned nose to house an AESA. The same would be true for JF-17.

Citing a report published in US journal, Geo News reported that Saudi defence ministry and Saudi Air Force are keenly examining the JF-17 Thunder program and mulling over their participation in it.

Saudi Arabia to upgrade fleet with Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder jets

Saudi Arabia has shown interest in buying JF-17 Thunder jet fighter aircraft manufactured under Pakistan-China cooperation.

Citing a report published in US journal, Saudi Defence Ministry and Saudi Air Force are keenly examining the JF-17 Thunder program and mulling over their participation in it.

The report claimed that Pakistan has offered Saudi Arabia for joint manufacturing of JF-17 Thunder aircraft along with technology transfer. This offer was made to the Saudi Arabia Deputy Defence Minister Salman bin Sultan during his visit to Pakistan last week.

This would represent a potential significant strategic shift from Saudi Arabia, which has traditionally relied on US and Western defence technology for its military needs. The Royal Saudi Air Force, for example, is largely organised around its massive fleet of Boeing F-15 Eagles, with a couple European fighters also thrown into the mix. As recently as September 2010, the US announced a $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia, which included the sale of 84 new F-15s and upgrades on 70 of Saudi Arabia’s existing ones. It was the largest arms deal in US history.

Pakistan, for its part, has long been trying to find countries to buy the JF-17 in order to reduce the per-unit cost the Pakistan Air Force pays for procuring the plane.

Yet China and Pakistan have long struggled to find customers for the JF-17, which China calls the FC-1. This hasn’t been for lack of trying, as the two countries have aggressively marketed the plane over the last few years. For example, a Flight Global article in 2010 said that China was in negotiations with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Venezuela, while Pakistan was in talks with Turkey and Egypt.

A defence accord between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia was signed in Islamabad on January 20th, while a similar agreement between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia was signed in Jakarta two days later.

Point taken.

The more news agencies reporting it, the more likeliness that the deal is on its way to be ready-to-eat.

The more they SHOUT the less chances the actually BUY! Those who want to deal and buy do not trumpet until the dotted line is signed. Unfortunately this seems another one of those Ghost sales!!
