Pakistan demands apology over drone strike

Pakistan has demanded an apology and explanation from the United States over a drone strike in a tribal region, which officials said killed 35 people, the foreign ministry said.

It is the seventh such attack in nine days.

"The government of Pakistan strongly condemns the drone strike which has resulted in a large number of casualties," foreign ministry spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua said in a statement.

"Foreign secretary Salman Bashir conveyed this strong condemnation to US ambassador Cameron Munter and has demanded an apology and explanation.

"This is not only unacceptable but also a flagrant violation of all humanitarian rules and norms."

Ms Janju added that Pakistan's ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, had also been asked to make a similar strong protest to the State Department.

Thursday's attack was the most lethal drone strike to hit the lawless region of North Waziristan since August 2008 when the covert campaign escalated in the areas bordering Afghanistan.

In an official statement, prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also strongly condemned the drone attack, saying "it will only strengthen the hands of radical and extremist elements," an official statement said.

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani also slammed the strike which he said hit a council of tribal elders as "unjustifiable".

"It is highly regrettable that a jirga of peaceful citizens, including elders of the area, was carelessly and callously targeted with complete disregard to human life," he said, adding the army had protested "in the strongest possible terms".

All US operations are driven by INTELLIGENCE. US doesn't like Hafiz Gul Bahadur, Pakistan's Army and ISI like Gul Bahadur -- Pakistan seeks to avoid action in NWA, US wants action in NWA -- instead of preventing such attacks Pakistan's army "demands" apologies, it's surreal, and may I say, it's sad political theater.

The targets must have been approved by the PA, so whats the point in demanding apology from the US... ask Kayani for an explanation.

Why is he claiming it to be unjustifiable? Sounds strange to me...

No dis respect meant but this demand for apology is not understood.

More blood money perhaps ?

Pak has allowed itself to be trampled to a point that none of its protestations are taken seriously any more.

In any case it is different to differentiate which part of the action was with the concurrence of GOP & which without if any.

For how long will we ask and request apologies? They just killed Tribal Police, Tribal Elders and possibly Women and Kids, and we ask for apologies? what kind of sick human beings are these people?

If Hakimullah shoots a rocket at Zrdaris family and kill his son, Nobody expects Zardari yelling at news reporters the next day informing Hakimullah that hes waiting for an apology. WTF!?

When pakistan will take strong action? This is daily drama now.

No offence but ........ Pakistan is in great trouble. You have to help yourself.

Pakistan might be in great trouble but who cares??? Like America is our "ally" and we would like to even get disintegrated with this pride. :)

and Altaf Kut@@ says america should pay deat for the families of dron attack. again they are proving that we are for sale $$$$ but america would have replied that " is maheney ka kharcha pehley day chukey abi to aur bhi bohot baki hai aglay maheney ka phir dengay"
Coas said we need apology from america ... oh bhai ap ko apology k liye rakha hai 80 % budget apology k liye detay hain ham bhokey martey hain apology k liye ... apology to yahi kam politician sirf kuch lakh main kar detay hain ... phir defence main bhe kuch politicians na bharti karwa lain . . . .
