Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday exchanged verbal blows following violent confrontations at the Gaza Strip border over the weekend, in which 16 Palestinians, including Hamas activists, were killed.
Netanyahu, who responded to Erdogan's aggressive remarks, rejected the criticism that Israel exerted too much force. "The moral army in the world will not accept moral exhortations from those who for years have indiscriminately bombed civilian populations," he wrote in his Twitter account, referring to Turkey's struggle against Kurds in its territory and neighboring countries. "Apparently this is how Ankara marks April 1."

A few hours later, Erdogan continued his offensive against Israel and against Netanyahu. He called him a liar and a terrorist. In a speech in Adana province, Erdogan said to Netanyahu: "Control yourself and stop lying, the Turkish army has not harmed anyone in the world, you know what you did in Gaza and what you did in Jerusalem.
Israel, Erdogan said, is "only strong against the oppressed." According to him, Netanyahu should not "boast about the nuclear weapons in his arsenal, since he will prove to be ineffective when the time comes."
Yesterday, Erdogan said that Israel's response to the demonstrations and the "return march" was "inhumane slaughter."

Relations between Israel and Turkey remained strained despite the reconciliation agreement signed in 2016 following the crisis that erupted after the Mavi Marmara flotilla in 2010, in which 10 Turkish citizens were killed after a naval commando unit tried to stop the vessels from reaching the Gaza Strip.
Israel accuses Turkey of supporting Hamas, including hosting senior members of the military wing. Turkey, on the other hand, led the Muslim countries that opposed the declaration of US President Donald Trumpel on Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and was one of the countries that promoted the proposal makes sense at the UN.
