Islamabad: Clashes as authorities demolishing Afghan slum
Posted on July 30, 2015 — No Comments ↓
Islamabad: Capital authority aided by Police and machinery launched operation against Afghan slum which provoked the inhabitants and resulted in protest, reported Dunya news.
As the CDA officials reached Sector I-11, baton-wielding Afghan refugees came out of their houses to stop the operation. They were asking for alternative settlement place prior to demolitions. A demand which CDA authorities rejected and maintained that alternatives can be discussed after the evacuation.
Meanwhile, a heavy contingent of police and Rangers personnel arrived at the scene and were directed to remain alert to counter the protesters.
The settlement in Sector I-11 is the largest such kachchi abadi (slum) in the federal capital, housing more than 20,000 people.
Supreme court has asked the authorities to clear the capital from the illegal slums.
