SLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government has reportedly decided against extending the tenure of the chief of its spy agency, DawnNews reported late Saturday.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who has been the Director General (DG) of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency for the last three-and-a-half years, will reportedly be transferred to the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) as its head.

Pasha was handed a one-year extension as chief of the premier spy agency last March. However, following his alleged role in the Memogate scandal, it was being reported that Pasha will not be given another extension.

According to sources quoted by DawnNews, the government is keeping mum on ths issue for now. “Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will take the final decision after his one-on-one meeting with the President Asif Ali Zardari,” sources told DawnNews.

In what may come as a surprising development, the government may appoint a non-military official or a retired military officer as the new chief of the ISI.

Meanwhile, another source close to Pasha disclosed that the DG ISI did not want an extension, particularly after the bitter memogate episode, which had reportedly distanced him from the prime minister.

At least four senior military officers, including the Corps Commander Lahore Lieutenant General Rashid, Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam, Deputy Director General ISI Major General Asfandyar Pataudi and the incumbent DG Military Intelligence Major General Noshad Kayani are also being considered for the slot to be vacated by Pasha.

Meanwhile, the US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter said last week that his country’s ties with Pakistan could be affected by Pasha’s retirement.

If Pasha is appointed the head of the Strategic Plans Division, he will replace Lieutenant General (retired) Khalid Qidwai, who has been heading this organisation for the last 12 years.

Sources claim that the government believes Pasha’s appointment as DG PSD will “help the future of Pak-US nuclear and strategic engagement.”

Current DG was the founding father of SPD with few other Brigadiers and Colonels. Over the years he has not only laid basic structured of SPD, but also enhanced Pakistan's strategic program. Only a hardworking General replace him...it would be no surprise if Mr.Pasha replace him.

Rumor was Pasha wanted to move out of the country.. or at least his family might.
too many threats.
Apparently the CoAS seems to have other ideas.

.

His only son died in an alleged accident, numerous attempt on Pasha life even when he was DG ISI.No wonder, his job took a emotional and psychological toll on him and he want to distance himself from everything

A pack of misinformation, Indian rhetoric, debunked many times in past.

Only army work 20 hrs. a day, only army sacrifice their lives and of their families, while some only conspire against Pakistan.

Unfortunately for you batman, Most in Pakistan agrees with me, you feel free to stay in denial all you want.

Zia, Mush, Pasha, Kiani all failed jernails.

Its just a matter of time when we will see US raids on our Nuclear sites.

I agree to the first part ,but the i strongly disagrees with the second .I am pretty sure our jawans are fully capable of defending our nukes or other assets, any General in bed with the Americans in Pakistan will be dead long before Americans or anybody else ever allowed to come near the nukes.

some of these generals kids are attending universities in west where fees range from 50,000/dollars or over a year.

there is no such university in west that charges $50,000 a YEAR!!
and one more thing, these people spent 20-30 years of their life to earn these positions! they started their careers as soldiers like every other soldier in the army...

people who start in the army as just a soldier has no chance of making it to the General usually officers start from captain and then move on from there.please in future if u have no knowledge on subject feel free to stay out of it.

That doesn't invalidate his point. Generals are just like any other officers, and have spent their lives working to earn the position they are in. They have spent their lives dedicated to protecting you and me, and I think they deserve these perks.

This news is pure speculation, nothing is going to be changed. Thanks to Dawn and Express, they did some maths on paper and used some probability to break this news...both interesting and stupid as it sounds:D

fake news there is no chance of Pasha to head SPD........ Regards.
you mean DAWN is lying
