New Delhi: It was the speed and spontaneity with which the Indian Army launched its attacks that took the enemy by surprise, leading to their victory in the 1999 Kargil war, says Lieutenant General Mohinder Puri, who headed the 8 Mountain Division.

Gripping accounts of valour and fortitude from the battle front of the war between India and Pakistan have been recollected in a new book penned by Puri.

The book titled 'Kargil: Turning the Tide', which was launched in Delhi on Tuesday, is a first-hand narrative of the operations of 8 Mountain Division, which was tasked to evict the enemy from the Drass-Mushkoh Sector during 'Operation Vijay'.

"We surprised the enemy with the speed and ferocity of our movement. It was the speed with which we conducted the operations and took them totally by surprise, this was one of the reasons why we succeeded in evicting the enemy," he said.

Speed and surprise are biggest weapons. That do not give the sufficient time to enemy to think. plan and react. By the time they could consolidate, you have half of the war won.

We all know the fate of every Kargil thread.........

For some : It was an absolute victory, but NS screwed it
For some : It was a victory because PA still hold 1 peak
For some : It was brilliant plan but poorly executed by mushraff
For some : It was a Political and Military blunder by an over ambitious over confident COAS
For some : It was embarrassment for Indian intelligence agencies and final victory for IA in the end.
For some : It was a victory over over ambitious enemy
For some : It was a victory for airforce since few IAF planes/choppers where shot down.
For some : It was a diplomatic victory for GoI and military victory for India
For some : It was back stabbing by Pakistan immediately after spectacle peace effort by both nations
For some : It was an unnecessary war fought by 2 nuclear countries

You can select what ever suits your thoughts and beliefs and be happy. Let the moderator close down the thread before it becomes a troll fest.

India WIN :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

From a neutral source, commenting soon after the Kargil conflict.

Indian newspapers and their public believe--or say they believe--that the conflict in Dras-Kargil last year was a military victory for India. In fact, it was a war 'won' by briefings and a slavishly supportive media. The Indian public wanted to be assured of 'victory,' and every effort was made to provide that assurance. Kargil was disastrous for Pakistan in worldwide political terms, and was an important public relations coup for the Indian government, both internally (in the run-up to the election), and internationally. But militarily it was a shambles for India whose brave but ill-prepared soldiers suffered gravely and would have sustained even heavier casualties had the conflict continued. The prime minister of Pakistan was ordered by the president of the United States to withdraw his troops from a successful military operation and this was done in time to save the Vajpayee government from the wave of criticism that would have swamped it had the confrontation not been stopped.
There is no question about the courage of members of the Indian armed forces, but they are badly-equipped, have no support from government save when political points can be scored, and are not prepared for war, either tactically or in its higher direction. The army is as desperately short of 'teeth arms' officers as the air force is short of pilots. Senior officers seem to devote an inordinate amount of time seeking legal redress for alleged injustices, and there are over 1,000 cases waiting resolution, which is not a sign of a contented defence force--and a discontented defence force is unlikely to be an efficient one.

it was neither speed nor surprise.

The indian counter attack was inevitable, so surprise isnt a factor.
The speed can never be attained on foot in mountain region, but on air transport yes but that wasnt used in front lines.

The major factors in Indian advance were Nawaz getting cold feet and IAF bombing.

Actually Nawaz did a splendid job pursuing Bill Clinton to pursue india for a cease fire. Else lot more Pakistani soldiers would have died before Pakistan accept a surrender document like 1971.

Your post is nothing more than trolling.
You clearly have no idea about Kargil war, the order to drawback caused maximum number of causalities.

For argument sake lets say India lost. But how come losing ground & getting evicted from occupied peaks count as win? This is weird logic. Just fighting India seems to be considered as a victory by pakistan.

Pakistan anticipated India would cross the border and widen the conflict but that did not happen.
Pakistan did not anticipate Indias airstrikes , it is one of he stupidest military planning where you occupy enemy territory but dont expect the enemy to retaliate. It was the same in 1965 when they attacked kashmir but did not expect counter attack in punjab. Very dim witted military planning at the best.

A question that no Pakistani wants to answer:

Objective: Take control of key heights in Kashmir overlooking key Roads used by India army.

Was this achieved by Pakistan.....

Answer :NO

Pakistan Lost.

Pakistan already has control of peaks overlooking Indian supply routes and these are within range of PA weapons.
