3,21,695 people, between the age of five and older, speak Telugu and 280,867 speak Punjabi at home while Bengali and Tamil speakers number 2,59,204 and 2,38,699 respectively.

Hindi is nowhere. yet Indian gov asks Consul generals to read indep day messages in Hindi. When I objected to it in the 1990s, The consul general (a non-Hindi man) told me that it was the directive from external affairs ministry

"Indian" function play only Hindi songs. Look at indep day parade in nyc, all hindi domination. nyc mayor issues greetings in hindi because indian gov propagates hindi is india's language

this is a good point but they will have to choose one Indian language(or they have to choose all major languages)...
i dont think telugu will be a good choice... most non-telugu ppl will oppose... hindi wins on second vote am sure..

.
maybe because the major tech centers in India are mostly in the south?

There is no need to choose between Indian languages. Just use English. Every Indian in US know English. By pushing Hindi as the Indian language. other languages and people are downgraded.

yeah but govt of india also wants to use one Indian language, and hindi is that compromise language.. most of the real business is done in English though.... even in India.
you can just ignore hindi and use english.. nobody is forcing you...

There is a flaw here,
People having Hindi as mother tongue are very less, In a diverse country like India, people speak Hindi to communicate with others, So it seems Hindi has large user base in India

However when the common mean of communication is English (E.g. in US / UK), then people donot focus on learning third language,
A Rajasthani will learn English and Marwari
A Himachali will learn English and Himachali
A Pahadi (Uttarakhand) will learn English and Garwahli / Kumauni
A Bihari will learn English and Maithali
A Eastern UP person will learn English and Bhojpuri
A Gujrati will elarn English and Gujrati
A MP person will learn English and Bundelkhandi or Malvi

In India all these states are termed as Hindi states and It seems Hindi is the mother tongue of most

.
native Hindi speakers can only end up as pani puri vendors in major Indian cities , or Hindutva sanghis specialising in lynching and murdering minorities e.g Muslims, Christians , Tamils. In America they will be jobless

. .
I never met a single nri who was at least bilingual and couldn't speak hindi.( some spoke only English).
We had 70 NRIs in a batch of 125.

<<govt of india also wants to use one Indian language, and hindi is that compromise language>>
There is no need for an Indian language if it is understood by may be 10% Indians in US. Why fool the world to think everyone knows Hindi.Be honesty. Twll the world of the diversity of India.

<<you can just ignore hindi and use english.. nobody is forcing you...>>

MY tax money is wasted to elevate hindi. let hindi states use their money to promote hindi.

<<hindi is that compromise language>>

Where do you get the idea Hindi is the compromise language? Non-Hindi Peoples hate the Hindi imperialism. Go to this Facebbok Group and read the 100s of posts there. OIt has over 15000 members.

All the Indians in America combined will speak English the most followed by Hindi. Even Hindi i.e. Khari Boli dilect of Hindi belt is not the first language of Hindi speakers. Their first language is braj, awadhi, bhojpuri, maithili, marwari, garhwali etc.
