China continues to splash out on its defence spending, hiking its 2014 budget by 12.2 per cent to $147.11bn.

China will increase its defence budget by 12.2 per cent for 2014, the finance ministry says, marking another double-digit increase in the rising giant's military budget.

"The appropriation for national defence is 808.23 billion yuan ($A147.11bn), up 12.2 per cent," it said in a budget report on Wednesday prepared for the annual session of the rubber-stamp National People's Congress.

$132 BILLION out of a $9.3 TRILLION economy.

That's ONLY 1.42% of GDP.

That's disgraceful.

Yep. We have to protect the largest population in the world, one of the largest land masses in the world, and one of the longest borders in the world.

We are geographically closed in, and we have plenty of rival nations, including the sole superpower (global hegemon) America.

We have the most reasons out of anyone to spend a lot on the military budget.

Yet out of the biggest defence spenders in the world, we spend the very least as a percentage of GDP.

where you get 132? It clearly says 147.

But yea, our single soldier combat capabilities suck. A lot of hate on Chinese forums now when comparing to Russians and NATO, lol. Future soldier now!!!!!

147 billion Australian dollars。:hitwall:

The best thing to do, would be to spend a lot of money in "secret", and report much lower spending as the official number.

In fact, I am sure that is what we are doing right now.

F*ck transparency, when it comes to issues of national security.

I wish that,during President Xi‘s 10-year term,China's defence budget would be quadrupled to 450-500 billion US dollars。

131billion $, 1.3-1.4% of 2013's GDP, still very low per, if reach 2% will be 180billion $
Remember that, China's GDP is more than 50% of US(about 55%), so if China's defence cost less than 50% of US's defence cost, then US is reasonless to bla bla about China.

I think China should do the Russian 600 billion rearmament thing.

outside the budget, not used for maintenance or R&D, purely to equip all soldiers with the best Russian equipment.

There are still some WW2 like units in China that needs to go and either be cut or improved to current standards.

Looking at the navy development though, maybe the army top brass is not entirely satisfied with the current equipment and is looking to improve before mass producing on a wide scale.

Lets hope the real spending is a lot higher because if its not, we are in big trouble. You got to factor in inflation too.

Watch a dumb Yankee ask one of the most stupid questions you will ever see.

The Yankee was sent from the Yankee propaganda department. That's why he never asks why the Yankees invade so many countries and kill so many people all across the world.

USA got 10 CVN + 84 CG/DDG + 71 SSBN/SSN to maintain, that's why their military expenditure is huge.

Not only that, they also got several hundred foreign military bases and the wage is also much higher.
