China confirms railway link to India border

BEIJING: China has confirmed that construction of a link rail connecting Lhasa to Xigaze will be completed in 2015 bringing the rail connectivity in Tibet a lot closer to the Indian border.

Work on the 253-kilometre link railway connecting Tibets capital with the regions second biggest city of Xigaze began in September 2010 on a budget of $1.95 billion. It will pass through five counties and the 90-km-long Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon carrying both passengers and goods. The freight capacity has been put at 8.3 million tonnes of freight annually.

Xigaze, which is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas, recently got a new airport. The government has also disclosed that it plans to build another another extension of the plateau railway from Lhasa to Nyingchi, in the next five years as part of the region's plan for development in the 2011-2015 period.

India is also expanding its rail and road networks in the north east. By 2016 all the capital cities will be connected although it might not be very close to the border, but I assume fairly close.
