Days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on December 24, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by defence minister Manohar Parrikar is all set to clear on Thursday procurement of five S-400 supersonic air defence systems from Russia. Besides, the DAC will also clear a ‘Make in India’ plan to raise six regiments of Pinaka multibarrel rocket launcher systems (MRLS). The five S-400 systems will cost around Rs 40,000 crore, while the Pinaka systems will cost another Rs 14,000 crore.

South Block sources said the acquisition of the S-400 system, which has a range from 40 to 400 km, depending on the missile fired, could be through the Request for Proposals (RFP) or government-to-government route. The acquisition will be discussed between Modi and Putin and may figure in the joint statement.

Although the military had earlier projected a requirement of a dozen S-400 systems, the defence ministry is clear that only five systems are sufficient to take care of the future airborne threat from across India’s borders. The S-400 is a proven antiaircraft system, and is widely considered the most advanced of its kind in the world, with the capability of engaging missiles as well as aircraft. It comes with a mobile launcher and a threat detection radar-cum-command centre. The deal includes purchase of some 6,000 missiles from Russia.

The DAC is also expected to clear Pinaka MRLS that is expected to replace traditional artillery guns on the border. The Pinaka system can fire within seconds a barrage of unguided rockets with a range of up to 38 km to achieve a saturation bombing effect, or what is called area destruction. This kind of weapon system is lethal for troop and armour concentrations, and is also battle-proven

five S-400 systems with 6000 SAM missiles & six regiments of Pinaka so any movement both at sky and ground is going to cost hell. Hope Half of the Pinaka would be of Mark-II

How s400 compares with David sling of Israel?

Five S400 for Rs 40000 cr that means $6.5 billion !
Who will be paying it ? Army ? AF ? SC ?

There will be no contracts on PAKFA and MTA :(

No proper source. India wont buy 5 S-400 for 7 billion$.
7 bill $ is price for 14 S-400 batteries

On 17 November 2010, in an interview Rafael's Vice President Mr. Lova Drori confirmed that the David's Sling system has been offered to the Indian Armed Forces. But Still India is going for S -400 so we can just assume that S-400 had slight upper-hand on David's Sling

Its all rumor brother. why would we pay 1.3 billi$ for 1 S-400 battery until they are offering us TOT

probably some hidden agreement Indo-Russian deals are always like that, still no official purchase of S-300 but they are protecting our sky for more than a decade

Can some one tell me this
5 systems
6000 missiles

Now what i have read is this
Only 1 system comprising up to eight divisions (battalions) can control up to 72 launchers, with a maximum of 384 missiles

One division of the C-400 can include about six launchers, and the means of location, guidance and control.

Main line
Numbre de missile par rampe meaning Missile number per ramp where 384 is written as total

Now 6000 missiles
Assuming all missiles are reloaded so each system carries 384+384 = 768

So 6000 missiles divided by 768 = 7.65 systems

Even if make it 384+384+384 = =1152 then 6000/1152 = 5.2 systems

So unless someone tells me we are buying just 5 systems with 1x firing and 2x reloading ability looks a bit difficult

1x firing and 1x reload = 7+ systems

1X firing and 0.5 X Long Ranged SAMs reloading = 384+192 = 576 implying 6000/576 = 10.42 systems
(Short ranged SAMs will be used only when LR SAMs are exhausted and in process of reload implying targets breaching the first tier 400km or even second trier 250 km breached and now 120kms SAM to engage - a scenario for saturation attack or large number of airspace hostiles infringement)

I think article is somewhat incomplete. Feel some key infor missing...
@vostok
Sir, Can you help us with some information. If 6000 Missiles are ordered, Can you help us define how many systems and approximate batallions comprising of or say per system missile numbers + reload to understand the number of systems India is procuring...

As far as I know, anti-aircraft regiments, armed with S-400 consists of 2 (3) divisions. Total - 18 launchers, 72 missiles. And at least the same number of missiles in the transport and loading vehicle.
