DHAKA: Bangladesh has lifted a four-decade ban on Indian films in a bid to boost attendances at cinemas, a government minister said on Saturday, drawing loud complaints from local actors and directors.

Indian films were banned in Bangladesh since the country’s independence in 1972 in a bid to protect the local movie industry.

“We lifted the ban to boost the cinema industry,” Bangladesh Commerce Minister Faruk Khan said.

Cinema hall owners, who have been clamouring to be allowed to show Indian films, said they expected to start showing Indian films shortly.

Kazi Firoz Rashid, president of Bangladesh Cinema Halls Owners Association, said the government’s decision was “the best thing to have happened” to the country’s cinemas.

“Film enthusiasts can easily see good Indian films on cable television so why should we stop Indian films being screened in our cinemas?” Rashid said.

The lifting of the ban comes amid warming relations between India and Bangladesh after ties worsened between the neighbours when an Islamist-allied government was in power in Dhaka from 2001 to 2006.—AFP

I did not know Indian Movies were banned in Bangladesh until now, The few Bangladeshis I know are well versed with all the movies.

OH NO ...

There is no Demand for them ... :hitwall:

Thats what Indian guy said here ...
Let the Indian public decide if they want to watch BD movies, and let the cinema hall owners and distributors decide if showing BD movies will be a good business. But, banning must be withdrawn.

If Bangladesh makes decent movies and distributors sense that they can make money out the them, then surely they will shown in Indian theatres.

If only bad movies are being made then there wont be any audience and it does not make any business sense for any one to import the movies.

agree with it...............but the market for Bengali movies will be limited only to west bengal and adjoining areas. that also it has to compete with local movies and Bollywood:partay:

When BD was east Pakistan, we produced many Urdu movies in Dhaka. Chanda, Chakori and many others were produced here. Actors and actreeses were from both the wings of the country in many of the films. After 1971, the movie industry in Dhaka died because of no competition from either Bombay or Lahore.

Although the producers thought that they would make good money whatever may be the quality of their productions, this did not work quite that way. Middle class educated people stopped going to the cinema halls. Many cinema halls, therefore, were converted to shopping centers and super markets.

I hope, Indian movie will bring the audiences back to the ticket counter and the local movie-makers will follow the lead of their predecessors before 1971 and produce good quality Bangla/Hindi/Urdu movies.

Yes good bengali movies must be dubbed in Hindi and Urdu for bigger market access. Bengali audience are not any small either.
But first you need to bring back old glory of Bengali movies. And competition is the way to go.

Good move. Its long overdue for India to lift restriction from our media and movies too... ;)

I was not aware Bangladesh has a film industry.

The content of the movie is the only factor that matters here. If it's worth watching then we watch it. I remember some years ago a Pakistani film was released which was quite successful.
