Bangladeshi Vegetarian Cuisine

Is Bangladeshi vegetarian cuisine as delicious as non-veg one?

Please understand people in Bangladesh do not consume large amount of meat in a regular meal, it just might be couple of ounces a day. However that changes in a festival where people pile up meat on their plates !

Which in itself is excellent as red meat is not good for health!

BD protein consumption should come mainly from lentils and fish.

List those Bangladeshi dishes that are made from strictly vegetarian ingredients with the exception of milk. Post pics and state the recipe.

Although this thread is Bangladesh-centric this is one question for which there is little chance of any Bangladeshi answer.

Edit-Add: And please list the vegetarian dishes of Bangladesh. Most members are just emphasizing their preference without giving many examples of vegetarian dishes.

Still hoping . . .

P. S.: And is it as delicious as the non-veg cuisine of Bangladesh?

Indian & Bangladeshi cuisines are almost same. Esp. East Indian cuisines. Just a difference is we have an additional recipe called Beef curry which is not that common in India because of Hindu sentiments. Pork is not common in either India or Bangladesh but Bangladeshi Christians eat pork. So, Bangladeshis even though very tiny portions do eat pork also.

Since Bangladesh is a riverine country fish is almost a staple food. Its in almost every day recipe or minimum 4 / 5 days in a week we eat fish. Bengalis add fish in most of 'veg' items.

Total veg items are not that common. We generally add fish in veg items. A total vegetarian Bengali or Bangladeshi is extremely rare. Bangladeshis avoiding red meat are common but avoiding fish completely is very rare occurrence unless for health issues / allergy.

The most common veg item is 'Lentile light liquid soup. Its called 'Moshurer Dal or 'Patla Dal' means 'light liquid dal'

Indians have other type of dal (very thick dal) but Bangladeshi dal recipe is very light.

This daal is almost everyday recipe.

Other veg item is Shaak or leafy green. All types of Shaak is eaten regularly by Bangladeshis but most of the time we add small fish in it. Only Shaak bhaja or light fried leafy green is also consumed.

Most common is red spinach.

Green spinach is also common.

Niramish Torkari or Mixed Vegetable Curry is also a common recipe.

Dherosh Bhaji or Bhendi Bhaji / ladies finger recipe.

Begun Bhaja or Eggplant fry is also common recipe.

Another 'Bangladeshi' vegetable recipe. Actually its a Chinese vegetable recipe but its so popular and common in Bangladesh that its now considered a local / deshi recipe.

Yes apart from vegetables, fish is the main food in Bangladesh... meat is eaten rarely in comparison of other Muslims around the world.... India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar are mostly rice eating countries with fish gravies (in India it's mostly vegetarian gravies with rice) with rice whereas from Pakistan, Iran and other central Asian countries main food is red meat with rotis or bread....

Did not I say YOGA and VEGETARIANISM is a growing trend in Bangladesh in this thread???? Nobody was believing me.... see the proof....

Bangladesh is India's neighbor.... how long it can stay away from the benefits of YOGA and VEGETARIANISM???

See the latest thread how even their police have started doing YOGABHYAS.....

Your dp is more like satire / sarcasm than any regard for Gandhi.

Not a fan of veg, so voted for second option. I don't think any Muslim Bangladeshi poster prefer vegetable diet. So I don't think we can say if veg diets are delicious or not!

We are fond of meat, egg or fish ( I personally dislike all fish though except ilish) . We take mosur dal and alu vorta too ( also some people sometimes include fried veg that we call vaji) , but don't eat all rice ( Bhat) with it. I mean we can start with it and later take meat, egg or fish .8-)
There is a difference between vegetarian diet and simply eating vegetables. One should eat vegetables for a good health. You cannot only rely on meat and eggs.

Yes. I am a Buddhist from Bangladesh and I can share with you some vegetarian diet.

If you talk about my personal vegetarian diet then I love Daal a lot. I eat Daal twice a day, everyday.

Then I love eating sweet potatoes and watermelon juice a lot. I consume sweet potatoes every day.

I am a huge fan of bhindi and cabbage.

If you ask me my favourite party vegetarian diet then it's Masala Dosa, hands down.

But I am a non vegetarian and I eat meat too.

I eat Pork, Chicken and Mutton. I don't eat Beef. I love pork barbecue and mutton biryani. Those are my favourite non veg diet.

My friend you are Buddhist and then how can you be a non vegetarian???? Buddhism is based on lord buddha's teachings who believed in AHIMSA (NON VIOLENCE)....

I still don't understand how Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos all these countries are non vegetarian Inspite of being Buddhist nations.... they should have been vegetarian....

My friend I don't have any doubts on what you are saying but for my knowledge can you share some authentic source confirming Lord Buddha was non veg eater and used to eat pork too?

Yes. Lord Buddha died of food poisoning. He ate pork in his last meal.

But his diet has not been recorded enough.
