Mumbai, Feb 28: It was just a couple of days ago a verbal battle broke out between union minister Salman Khurshid and BJP leadership after Khurshid called the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi 'impotent'. Now its the turn of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to create a controversy. The Shiv Sena chief on Friday slammed Defence Minister AK Antony saying, "defence minister and his team are sitting like impotents". The Shiv Sena chief, in the party newspaper Saamna, was reacting to the recent warship and submarine accidents. In the newspaper editorial, Uddhav said he wondered why the minister was still sticking to his chair despite so many tragedies. "Sindhurakshak went down killing 18 and now Sindhuratna met with an accident. The defence minister saved himself and sunk Admiral Joshi. It seems the Indian forces have stopped producing guns and canons and have started making Fevicol. That's why it looks like the defence minister is sticking to the chair even after so many accidents." "The defence forces are infested with termites. Submarines are turning into ashes; MiGs are collapsing and jawans are being beheaded on the border. And in spite of all this, the defence minister and his team are sitting like impotents," he said. Antony was trying to save himself by making Admiral Joshi, who quit as navy chief, a scapegoat for recent accidents, said Thackarey. "In Admiral Joshi's tenure, maximum number of accidents took place in the Navy and he resigned because of that. Then why, on the same grounds of morality, is the defence minsietr not quitting?...If by sinking Admiral Joshi, Antony is trying to save himself, then this is the height of shamelessness. Had Antony resigned before the Navy chief, he would have maintained his dignity....Antony is a useless Defence Minister. Defence ministry is not his cup of tea. He will be better as education or Social Justice minister but this responsibility has been forced upon him by Sonia (Gandhi) and that's why he cannot even explain his pain," he said.

Government pushed Admiral Joshi to resign: Vishnu Bhagwat
“...The government wants to appoint a pliant chief who has been implicated in some scandal and cannot speak up. They don’t want a straightforward person”
“Admiral D.K. Joshi was one of the best Naval Chiefs the country has had. The government’s decision to accept his resignation will lower the morale of the Navy,” former Navy Chief Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat said in Mumbai on Thursday.

“The government drove him into resigning by attacking him and demanding explanations. Such incidents have been happening for years. The Navy Chief cannot be held responsible. Did the government demand the resignation of the Army Chief for the deaths in Kargil?” he said.

“The government has shown no grace even in the manner of accepting the resignation. They accepted the resignation with immediate effect. They could have said they accept it with utmost regret. They accepted his resignation in five minutes. Is this the way things are done,” he asked.

According to the former Navy Chief the final responsibility for such mishaps lies with the Defence Minister and the Prime Minister. “They should be held responsible in every way.”

The government had no choice but to appoint Admiral Joshi because he had impeccable credentials and an excellent service record, Admiral Bhagwat said. “They could not stop him from becoming Chief. They thought he would fall in line but that did not happen.”

“The bottom line is that the government wants to appoint a pliant chief who has been implicated in some scandal and cannot speak up. They don’t want a straightforward person,” he said.
