1,000 for the Turkish Army . These will be in 4 batches of 250 Tanks . i think after the second batch the engines will be Turkish , maybe first batch. -- The first two batches will be powered by the 1,500 hp (1,100 kW) MTU engines whereas the last two batches will be powered by an indigenous 1,800 hp engine. On 16 June 2008, SSM and industry members discussed a possible participation for the development of 1,800 hp (1,300 kW) indigenous power pack for use in the armoured personnel carriers and main battle tanks produced in Turkey. - On 15 December 2010, Defence Industry Executive Committee decided to start the development of national power pack.

Also maybe an Electrical Engine - Otokar General Manager Serdar Görgüç has announced that the company is considering the development of an electric engine for the Altay. Görgüç stated that an electric engine would reduce the ability of the enemy to identify the tank with thermal cameras in the battle field. He added that “Vehicles with internal combustion can be caught on thermal cameras". Otokar developed an electric engine for its buses and is working on retrofitting its design to the Altay tank.


About export - its still very early but i read that there was already expressed interest even at this stage .

Altay unfortunately is too heavy for our terrain, otherwise it would have been a great option for PA to follow.

The Turret is probably still a mock-up since it barrely was used on the trials. But for the record i think the countries that would be seriously considering to buy Altay would probably be Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Egypte (and the rest of north africa) Azerbadyan and the Turkic States. Most of these countries already have goodies from US and the west but still has a huge quantity of outdated Tanks that need to be replaced.

There isn't a national engine program which will have a power of 1800hp. The national powerpack is related with development of various land and naval engine family. The first priority belongs to 1500hp Tank engine and transmission development program to be integrated for first 250 Altay.

Koreans was asking a joint venture on a 1800 HP hybrid diesel-electric engine. What happened to it?
