Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

I think erdoğan has a grudge against the koç group so maybe.

He did meet with them a couple times sooo dunno. But yeah BMC is known for his closeness with RTE, add in Arab money and export potential... not good man.

I dont have something against a german joint but it doesnt make sense to me here. They were the reason why this project even started by sanctioning sales of Leo2a5 (or a6 ?) so its not really logical. Yes to german joint but not in this field. Otokar should get the offer.

Let say they give it to BMC would that make the delivery time for the first batch much later than if Otokar would have made them?

I've read BMC is still working on their factory... so probably yes.

Give first batch to Otokar, give BMC scraps if there is export potential (gulf?) or let them try to get in on second batch protection. No time to waste.

Turkey Mulling Upgrade to Leopard 2s, M60s

ANKARA--Turkey's military and procurement officials are mulling the options of upgrading hundreds of German-made Leopard 2 and U.S.-made M60 main battle tanks.

One senior procurement official familiar with the program said that about 100 Leopard 2s and 300 M60s would go through an upgrade program. Industry sources say such upgrades would cost Ankara anywhere between $2 million to $3 million per tank. A bunch of 300 to 400 tank upgrades will have a total cost of more than $1 billion.

They say Turkey's defense procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM in its Turkish acronym) would most likely award the Leopard 2 upgrade contract to the German Rheinmetall's three-partner, Turkey-based venture, RBSS. Rheinmetall's partners are the Turkish armored vehicles manufacturer BMC and the Malaysia-based Etika Strategi.

The planned M60 upgrades may mark the first Turkish-Israeli defense deal after the two former allies froze their diplomatic ties in 2010 but agreed on détente recently. Ankara and Jerusalem are expected to appoint ambassadors to each other within days after they downgraded diplomatic representation to the level of charge d'affaires in 2010.

In the 1990s a bunch of Turkish M60s went through a successful upgrade by Israeli Military Industries (IMI).

Meanwhile, the Turkish government is expected to announce a bidding for the serial production of hundreds of Altays, Turkey's first indigenous, new generation main battle tank. The bidding is expected to open in the next few months. [/quote]

It seems that;
-Leopard-2 and M-60 upgrade goes to BMC-Rheinmetall cooperation
-250 Altay goes to Otokar.

Logical...

Why would you upgrade very old m60s spending millions when you can just get new tanks for a bit more? Is this about giving contracts to erdoğan buddies?

Bro I've read several times that mass production of Altays will commence in 2020, is it just BS reporting by Turkish Journalists ?

^Our new Tanks look definitive intimidating

They should upgrade 500~ m60 into sabra and all the leo 2 into leo2 ng (aselsan). I read somewhere that there were indeed plans to upgrade many of those tanks but the gulenists refused to give green light to them.

What happened to the upgrade package of Aselsan Leopard 2ng?
Some things are really wrong here.

I still believe that Aselsan will have a share in the electronic upgrade of the Leo II
But the armour package will come from Rheinmetall
