How is the ranking done? It doesn't seem like the list follows any one metric, like sales/profit/assets/market value.

They use a composite score based on all four metrics, with all of them weighted equally.

Forbes explains their methodology here:

Global 2000: How We Crunch the Numbers - Forbes

We add up all the scores for all four metrics (equally weighted) and compile a composite score for each company based on their rankings for sales, profits, assets and market value. We sort the companies in descending order by the highest composite score and then apply our Forbes Global 2000 rank. The highest composite score gets the highest rank.

For those banks, especially Chinese banks ranking so high, I do not think that is really that good a news.

wow Top 3 are Chinese.:yahoo::smitten::china:

Good to see a lot of American companies in Top 10.:smitten::usflag:

Wish any Pakistani company would've made it.:cry::smitten::pakistan:

Honestly, it's not so hard to get big banking and petroleum companies on the ranking, especially for a centralized state like China. Instead, the goals should be to get tech/manufacturing companies up there like General Electric/Apple/Volkswagon - these are the real achievements.

China needs to have more state-owned companies listed as a whole。

AVIC,for example,has close to 20 listed subsidaries。:hitwall:

In fact, out of the top 10 largest companies, half are Chinese and half are American.

And we are only at the very beginning of our economic rise. In 10-20 years I want to see us dominating the whole top 10. :cheers:

when you have the govt having near 70% of shares in a company, it will be so called " no 1 biggest company in the world"

the chinese govt owns 70% of the no 1 on that list

Nah, that's natural. One of the characteristics of bank is that they must be of sufficient scales that they can form an effective network in large areas, understandably they will be quite large. Plus, they are state owned so following state policy takes precedence over corporate profits.
