It doesn't look like India itself wants to be part of SCO. The SCO itself has a security part attached to it, why would India want to associate with a group headed by China which has security as a parameter? It was obvious when India hosted a virtual summit and barely made any effort to give importance to SCO. India being in both QUAD (US camp) and SCO (China camp) is not feasible. I have seen enough rambling from Chinese posters in social media that they also think the same way.
Virtual summit, virtual silence - The Hindu
I will differ with that observation
SCO's goals if you check, are regional cooperation in multiple fields. Security cooperation was deliberately kept aside, or let us say never mentioned overtly to make sure USA wasn't going to be feel threatened.
India joined SCO to make sure Russia didn't intertwine itself with China completely, and Russia proposed India to make sure China didn't dominate this org. It is a win win
The virtual summit is a result of multiple things, and has come about due to recent geo political developments. Indo Chinese relations weren't this bad till Galwan, and we became a full member of SCO in 2017. So we can't think about this in current scenario only, and don't forget even today most of our spares are dependent on Russia. So we have to make sure, Russia doesn't get too dependent on China.
Let us also not forget that, other than China SCO has members from Central Asia and Russia too. Unless China declares us as a enemy openly, and demands to push us out we will not be moving out of SCO.
The rumblings of Chinese is nothing new, and they will go quiet once CCP tells them to. The more important signal that needs to come, is from Xi and CCP. As of now they aren't sure how to deal with India. They have tried to see how far they can push us, by doing Galwan and over played their hand. It was supposed to be a signal, to say don't cozy up too much with West. In addition to this, they also wanted to externalize the pandemic by whipping up war sentiment. It backfired as we jumped headlong into a sort of alliance kind agreement with USA.
China already has too much on its plate, vis a vis support to Russia in Ukraine and growing support of US to Taiwan. IF they push us out of SCO, its a clear message that we are the enemy. The very idea of BRICS will collapse, if they push us away from any multilateral orgs that we are members of along with them. How many fronts are they going to deal with?
As to why we should be part of the orgs? Relations with China haven't deteriorated to the level that we should get out for one. Secondly depending on the West completely, is never a wise idea. In a way by staying in SCO or BRICS, we keep the ball in China's court as to what their next moves are. Time will tell of how they may choose
