Why lots of tall buildings collapsed? Chinese engineers sent to Turkey to learn first hand lessons from the earthquake

Looking at collapsed structures, it appears most structures were either old or were not built to withstand intense earthquake. Even seismic aware designs cannot hold up during such intense earthquake as this. Example: Kobe, Tohoku/Fukushima in Japan, Northridge and Loma Prieta in California. With the intensity of this earthquake, more than half of most structures would fail in anyplace. Not to say there was no poor building design and construction in many of the collapsed buildings.
