US to release EMALS technology to India for aircraft carriers

The Trump administration sent a response to India about its decision to release this technology.

WASHINGTON: The US has decided to release the crucial Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System for the Indian Navy's future aircraft carrier, according to the Trump administration.

The decision comes ahead of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's visit to India. A formal date of the visit has not been announced yet.

The Trump administration has informed India of its decision.

India had sent a letter of request to the US government during the Obama administration for the Electromagnetic Launch System (EMLAS) built by General Atomics for aircraft carrier planned by the Indian Navy.

Due to its flexible architecture, EMALS can launch a wide variety of aircraft weights and can be used on a variety of platforms with differing catapult configurations.

The Trump administration sent a response to India on Monday about its decision to release this technology.

Aerospace expert Dr Vivek Lall, chief executive, US and International Strategic Development, of General Atomics had told earlier that General Atomics is planning to open an office in Delhi to support the Indian government's military requirements.

The Indian Navy plans to integrate the US-made EMALS catapults into its future supercarriers.

This gesture ahead of the Tillerson's visit is another indication of the strategic alliance US wants to foster with India, informed sources said.

Last month, the Defence Secretary Jim Mattis visited India.

@Abingdonboy @nair Notice the second graphic, 65000 Ton Ship, which is what IN is trying for IAC 2.
Should that be interpreted as US involvement in IAC 2?

too many fake news. I will only believe the news when India actually gets EMALS or when a major western outlet carries this news.

I doubt USA would give such a game-changing technology to India without anything in return.

Anyway India can't make do with EMALS anyway. India simply doesn't have the money to build a CATOBAR aircraft carrier.

If I remember correctly, the 2nd STOBAR carrier is nowhere near completion ; the naval engineers are idle.

Moreover, the CAG already criticized the Mig-29k for being faulty.

India has to decide on a new fleet of new variant of carrier planes, as we all know, this will take decades.

Conclusion : India better gets its game on for STOBAR carrier and stop dreaming like its China.

Bigger question is : F 35 for India !!

Bigger question is : F 35 for India !!

USA only offered F-16 latest generation to India, if not then why India pushed hard for MRCA Russia and Rafale?

USA also mindful of not causing arms race in South Asia. South Asia most planes are 3G or 3.5G planes.

If India gets F-35, Pakistan will definitely buy S-400 missiles.
S400 missiles will definitely cause India to panic, with the range being able to hit plane taking off from New Delhi airport from Pakistan.

India could have bought J31(carrier version pending) from China but of course, India always wants to act tough and big brother, actually admires China but actually too ashamed to build good relations with China cause of pride.

The J-31 actually fits india's requirements plus its cheaper.

Okay then hide in your hole don't pop out here again...

Re yaaar who told you to believe..Infiltrates every thread with implausible statements & starts whining..Why would India need Chinese?India doesn't need poor implementation of stolen blueprints..

It is a possibility but i'm sure NG will be eying to supply E2D Hawkeye for Vishal class ACs, for which IN has already expressed interest.

As long as India is the end user nation and no transfer of technology involved, the USA will sell this to India at hefty price. If that won't be enough, they will fleece India on maintenance.

Has India informed US that it is ready to take EMALS?

India cant even build a stobar carrier even with foreign advisors, T.O.T and blueprint.

China for one took 6 years for an aircraft carrier, from start to finish.

Once the INS Vikrant is commissioned in 2023, it would have taken 3 times longer.

Most of the tech on the ship would be dated technologies.

Imagine using a Nokia 3310 when iPhone X is available.

You can only make calls and sms.

We need this technology badly.
With this we can launch heavier aircraft’s from existing aircraft carriers with ease.
Our new carriers incorporating this system will be useful atleast for the next 50 years minimum.

For CATOBAR with EMALS you need at least 40-50 aircraft to make it efficient.

Also, india doesnt have SU-33 or F/A-18

Not to mention a workable design that betters the nitmitz class

Plus a good carrier battle group to escort.

I dont see India with CATOBAR in next 100 years, only NICOBAR islands.

Once india has a catobar carrier, it better has the best escorts.

China will definitely give pakistan something way better than brahmos for one hit kill.

In fact, by that time even a DF-21 anti ship ballistic missile with 3,000 km range would be more than sufficient to destroy the potential catobar with all the escorts.

EMALS would be some nice tech for the navy. Indian Navy is ahead of the curve compared to the airforce and army.
