If you really want to understand the legend of Gen Hameed, you need to go through his entire military career, not just the Afghan jihad...

Moreover,, military operations are never a one man show... A three star like Gen Akhtar couldn't be everywhere.... There were many Maj Gens and Brigadiers who went actually inside Afghanistan....

I guess we will never know the true scope of operations conducted by Pakistan in the 80's.

Brigadiers Afzal Janjua, left and Yasub Dogar..... Inside Afghanistan overlooking an ambush inside Gardez.... Both from SSG... Gen Afzal later became a three star and CGS, with a SJ as well... A couple out of many....

Pretty much explained in thread already that you can't just understand these legends for one event. Same as like, do you know why German Official gifted a piece of Berlin Wall to late Gen. Hamid Gul?

Indeed, one can't understand a legend that simply.

One of the many pieces happen to be at my parents home as well.

Once he shifted entire 1st Armor under the nose of bordering Indian city during Rajiv Gandhi era.

That was a real Ertugrul styled reply to India and a sample piece of our swift mobilization capability!

True.
Never one man show in Military's operations. So much of planning, thinking, logistics, intelligence and you name it........................ very huge structure..

It takes a few decades to groom a legendary leader, but few seconds to cut off his/her head....

It's the institution that can churn out "legends" at a regular basis...

Hence, the attack is always on the institution serviced via few unscrupulous folks....

pakistan is in shadow of terrorism because of afghan jihad , people should judge who brought this to pakistan to train own citizen as mujahid for war in another country , pakistan is still paying price for those decisions.

all these stories are just for consumption of poor pakistanis , what was the end result ? no gain , not even an inch of kashmir came to pakistan .
