Think of it as a military-industrial complex two-fer -- first we invade Iraq, eight years later we're selling it F-16s. "Iraq has now made its first transfer payment for the purchase of 18 F-16 fighter aircraft," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday. "These aircraft are going to help provide air sovereignty for Iraq and to protect its territory and deter or counter regional threats." They represent "the cornerstone of the kind of cooperation that we hope to have in the future to support the secure, peaceful, democratic development of Iraq."

Iraqi jet jockeys can't wait. "It was a dream come true to fly in the F-16," Iraqi air force Brigadier General Ali al-Aaragy said after taking one of the fighters for a test ride at Arizona's Luke Air Force Base nearly three years ago. The first flock of F-16s is slated to arrive in Iraq in 2014. The U.S. is selling Iraq 18 of the "low end" of the Pentagon's famed "high-low mix" -- F-15s were the more costly "high end." But these 18 F-16s are no bargain.

The planes are going to cost $3 billion (extra spares and services could drive the total cost to $4.2 billion). That base price, without the options, works out to more than $165 million a plane -- more than the current estimated $154 million price tag on the much more modern -- so-called fifth generation -- F-35. (The Pentagon stopped buying F-16s back in 1995; it paid an average of $17 million per plane).

The good news is the deal will likely keep the Lockheed's F-16 plant in Fort Worth running perhaps a year longer. The bad news is that only 70% of Iraqis have access to clean water, and only 25% have clean sanitation.

As disappointing as this is, Iraq should know better then to purchase F-16's at $165 mill each, that is absolutely absurd to pay so much per jet. The Iraqis have other options available. I suppose they have either been forced to or pressured to purchase these F-16's from the US at a high cost. US Government is a guarantor of it's Defense contractors and helps them stay in business.

What a shame. I'm thinking the Iraqi parliament controls Government spending, so it's troubling to think the Iraqi parliament would allow such a ludicrous and bloated procurement to take place.

Did the US force the Iraqis to buy the F-16's at that cost?

Are you really going to argue that the Russians and Europeans were not willing to sell their own fighter jets?

AgNo they had the option of used Mirages.. but US made them buy at this ridiculous price it seems.

Sweet sweet price of freedom .. They were so ecstatic about being liberated that they forgot to check the blue book value on those planes.

This is daylight robbery. What block are these? They are calling them 'low end' so is it safe to assume that they are not block 52/60? Any idea of the weapons mix?

Block basic it seems... no weapons, no radars no anything...

Maybe just an extra seat for more people to go sight seeing..

It is way too expensive with its price on par with F-35 and more expensive than stealth version of F-15E. But maybe they can recover some of that amount by selling two or three of these to Iran at the triple the price. I am sure Iranians would love to take these planes apart and reverse engineer them.

must come with spare engines, missiles, warranty, training etc.;)

lockheed must bomb these liberal medias.

hahah.. go usa go... i have some family in lockheed martin. and they were afraid for their job. I think this deal will take care.
basically its as easy as taking a kids candy.

They would have been better off buying used Mirage 2000s which are more capable than older version F-16s. So there will be a separate deal for weapons, upgrades etc?
