I know he means there shouldn't be a blasphemy law. And he's right, there shouldn't. It's not a part of Islam, and it shouldn't be a part of our law.

There should be a hate-speech law to prevent incitement, and a law that bans the insult of all religious sentiments to prevent religious or sectarian conflicts. If only our law enforcement was competent.

But Ya Ali has more to do with recalling islamic tradition and history and raising the morale. It reminds muslims that be like Ali. After conquest of Mecca, a small battle was fought and during it muslims started retreating and dispersing, during it Prophet started shouting " I am Muhammad, Son of Abdullah!" Does it mean he is asking his father for help (astahgfirullah)? Even though according to prophets own saying in sahih hadith, his father is in hell. It's nothing but about having pride in ones history and reminding ourselves about where we come from.

You can just use the word ''secular'' when you argue with me, I don't mind. I disagree with secularizing Pakistan, not because I think it's Haram but because I think it's not practical and because I believe the issue can be solved in a much more pragmatic and effective way.

Let me put it this way : Secularism will benefit political mullahs since they'll have more ammunition and more of the religious conservative majority will flock to them.

A moderate and tolerant form of Islam, endorsed by the state, will practically destroy the political mullahs and will have support of the public.

Religion is powerful. Why not use it positively? Why should we let mullahs hijack it?

Pakistan is in the midst of various destrctive dynamics playing out simultaneously - decades of poor governance, decaying institutions, lack of faith in government and/or most institutions, a rise in religious extremism, intolerance, Islamic terrorism and the fallout from the war in Afghanistan. The state needs to build itself back up and exert control over its entire territory and gain the faith of its citizens. Only then can we expect our citizenry to engage in open dialog over the fact that Pakistan's current theocratic identity is based on regressive and discriminatory interpretations of theology, without being accused of blasphemy and being killed by a mob and/or terrorists.

But we can't, and shouldn't, stop highlighting the flaws in our system, of how Pakistan openly discriminates against the 'other' and why that is wrong, every chance we get.

Even Islamic extremists realize that the correct thing to do is to have a system where everyone is treated equally, regardles of race or faith, which is why they never tire of regurgitating claims about how 'Islam is a great religion that treats minorities equally', and then go back to massacring, raping and enslaving Barelvis, Shia, Ahmadi, Christians, Yazidi, and anyone else who they consider 'not a Muslim'.

I absolutely agree with all this. As for being 'evolved' enough,we don't need to 'evolve' in a way to abandon our religion or stop taking it seriously. We just need to evolve enough to tolerate differences of opinion. That will improve eventually. Let's not forget that European Protestants and Catholics were killing eachother and burning witches not so long ago. As people got educated, that changed.

Their hypocrisy never stops showing, from enforcing Burkas while dealing drugs and preaching the Quran while regularly and constantly disobeying it (e.g: there is no compulsion in religion, as per the Quran.). Political Mullahs are world-class hypocrites.
