It was probably named in ancient times after the favourite sport of the central asians for which they had to pass through the passes of the Hk to practice.

I personally don't think it's a nice name "hindu killer" and it should be renamed if hindus in pakistan find it offensive but if they're ok with it then the name should remain the same coz thats what it was historically called. So far i've not heard about hindus being offended by the name so it should be left alone until then.

I think it is a good idea, we could rename the Mountain Range to sth better.
Like Jinnah Mountains :pakistan:

What purpose change of name will serve ? Leave it as origional. why to look like a fool by changing it some artificial name.
In urdu we call it Hindu Kush but Himalya sounds sweet :)

Indians have changed names of Bombay and Madras and so on but people still love to call Bombay instead of Mumbai, similalry Madras instead of Chennai.

The new names sound silly.

wat difference will it make if we change the name from hindu kush (which is the actual name) to muslim kush??? i dont think if it will do any good instead it will only tell how cheap we are

besides that naming it that is ridiculous we'll have changed it to muslim killer in between a muslim countries but the way things are going it'll be renamed to bhutto mountain range like bhutto international airport :cheesy:

Changing name of mountain/ territory is internal matter of GOP. They can do as they wish.

It’s tricky .... there are lot of people looking for opportunities to defame your country (Pakistan). Any effort to change name (Hindu) may be provide chance to those people/ group to put Pakistan and it's people in Taliban’s (hardliners) category and term them anti-minority.

Also, even if you want to change its not good time to raise controversies. There are lot more important things need attention and resource.

Keep original.. keep history... even though translation of name (Hindu Killer) sound absurd.

Thanks for your sensible post.

Just one correction, mumbai is not a new name, its the original name. it was corrupted because of the gora sahab. not sure abt chennai.

btw everyone has accepted chennai, but not everyone has accepted mumbai because its got linked with parochial politics, which it is not. its just the original name. gujarathis, parsis, marathis - the original ppl always called it mumbai.

sigh... Thats not a very nice thing to say for a human being!

Why do you forget that there are millions of Hindus in Pakistan and you're basically saying I like the sound of the name of "Pakistani killers".

+1.

People should be proud of their heritage and not look through everything through narrow prism of Religion. On that tangent you would have to believe all your ancestors are all in Hell right now and completely change most surnames. It's a slippery slope of ignorance.

If I recall correctly the Taliban had this very same brilliant idea when they started blowing up priceless and ageless Bamyan Buddha statues and stupas early this decade. That would be akin to the Egyptians blowing up the Pyramids because they weren't Islamic.

change Hindu Kush into Muslim Kush :D just joking

Hindu Kush is a Historical Name ....

& Hindu is just regional name

I am in favor of renaming the Hindu Kush, are you also in favor of renaming the Hindu Kush Mountains...

Should Muslims reclaim the land by it's name...?

Any thoughts the land is now inhabited by Musulman's no longer Hindus...

For example, I thought of an interesting Geo-graphical comparison. Today we refer to Istanbul as Istanbul the name adopted and given by Ottoman/Turkish Musulman's to the city in 1453 c.e., we no longer refer to it as Constantinople -the name of the city when it was still under Byzantine rule...I can think of so many more...

Today the "Hindu Kush" mountains are inhabited by Muslims, ruled by Muslims, and within two Muslim countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) but in the case of Pakistan I agree we should rename these Mountains to something that suits our identity!!!

The reason its called hindu kush is because its a hindu killer, why its called that is that before muslims spread in to modern day pakistan etc people of hindu cast etc were taken slave by the afghans and central asians etc, as slaves their journey through the mountains was hard and many use to die on the way to kabul etc. So they named it hindu kush.

The name chennai for madras did not crop up from nowhere. Nor was it forgotten since the name Madras was used first.

Anyway naming cities is different from naming mountains, rivers and plateaus.

Madras (Chennai) originally called Chennapatnam. English names it Madras.
