ISLAMABAD: State Department spokesman Sean McCormack endorsed Musharraf's leadership during a regular briefing on Friday. "We believe that President Musharraf is an agent for positive change, not only in the region, but for Pakistan," McCormack said. Sean McCormack, while reaffirming continued US support for policies pursued by President Musharraf, also noted that demonstrations over judicial case against Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry are a sign of a "political system that is beginning to open up." "Our view is that Pakistan is a modernizing state. It is a state that is committed to economic and political reforms, and President Musharraf is the one who has led that way," McCormack said.As a result of changes Musharraf has instituted, the country has since 2001 moved in "the right direction in terms of its reforms," but is defining its own pace, he said. "We're going to be right there with them as a partner as long as they continue along that track, which they are. And we're going to encourage them along the way.
