President Joe Biden has nominated Nusrat Jahan Chowdhury, the first Muslim-American woman of Bangladeshi descent, to be a judge in a US federal court. The White House made the announcement on Wednesday (January 19th) after announcing the list of judicial nominees.

According to Al Jazeera, the US Senate has confirmed that Nusrat Jahan, a 44-year-old lawyer of Bangladeshi descent, will serve as a federal district court judge in New York State.

The White House said in a statement that Nusrat was the first Bangladeshi-American, the first Muslim-American woman, and the only second Muslim-American to serve as a federal judge.
Nusrat is currently the legal director of the Illinois state branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a civil rights group. He has previously served as Deputy Director of ACLU's Ethnic Justice Program in New York.

Nusrat Jahan was involved in a number of civil rights cases, including a federal government no-fly list and a case challenging the New York Police Department's surveillance of the Muslim community.
Earlier, in August 2021, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recommended to US President Joe Biden that Nusrat be appointed.

Nusrat Jahan Chowdhury is a graduate of the world renowned Yale Law School. Prior to joining the Civil Liberties Union, he also worked with Clark of the New York Southern District Court and Judge Barrington Parker of the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Source: Al-Jazeera
